Overview

Environmental Specialist II – Palm Beach County Health Department (Palm Beach, FL) – Conduct inspections, review applications for biomedical and hazardous waste permits, investigate complaints, enforce regulations, and maintain environmental health data.

• Inspect biomedical waste generators, transporters, storage, and treatment facilities for compliance with current state and county rules.
• Inspect hazardous waste generators per federal, state and county regulations; interpret compliance and permit conditions in the field.
• Coordinate with local fire departments and environmental agencies to develop and maintain a current list of toxic and hazardous waste substances utilized in Palm Beach County.
• Review applications for proposed biomedical and hazardous waste facilities to determine compliance with federal, state and local regulations; maintain permitting records in the Environmental Health Database.
• Investigate and report all types of complaints involving hazardous waste and biomedical waste; conduct field investigations and prepare enforcement action reports.
• Enter inspection records into the Environmental Health Database (EHD) in a timely manner.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

• Knowledge of physical or natural sciences terminology, principles, and analytical techniques.
• Knowledge of data collection and analysis principles and procedures.
• Ability to collect, evaluate, analyze and interpret scientific or technical data.
• Ability to prepare technical reports.
• Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures relating to environmental programs.
• Ability to understand and follow legislative policy direction as established in Florida Statutes.
• Ability to deal with the public in a tactful and courteous manner.
• Ability to work independently.

• A Bachelor’s degree in a physical or natural science, engineering, or planning.
• Master’s degree in a related field (preferred).
• Valid driver’s license.
• Hard hat, ear protection, safety glasses and steel‑toe safety boots required.
• Respiratory equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE) required.

Daily 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM (40 hours per week). This position requires daily in‑office or field work.
