Position: Environmentalist I
Performs site inspections at industrial sites, businesses, natural areas, and environmental enhancement sites and monitors compliance with contract specifications and permit conditions. Performs storage tank compliance inspection activities and petroleum cleanup restoration projects for facilities regulated by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) Petroleum Storage Tank Regulations, Unified Land Development Code (ULDC), Article 14.B, and other County codes. Inspects facilities to determine applicability and compliance;

prepares inspection reports; researches property/corporate information; maintains accuracy of databases, maps, and files associated with inspection activities; uses global positioning tools such as Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS); provides photo documentation/technical assistance to facilitate owners/operators in enforcement activities; investigates complaints. Performs job-related tasks while subject to adverse climate conditions and exposure to dust/fumes; climbs/walks on uneven surfaces (e.g., roadways/heavily trafficked areas) and lifts storage tank manhole covers.

QUALIFICATIONS
This position requires qualified applicants to possess one of the following:
  • A Bachelor's Degree in one of the Physical/Natural Sciences, Environmental Studies, Landscape Architecture, or Engineering,
OR
  • A r elated Associate's/unrelated Bachelor's Degree; minimum of two (2) years of related technical/ professional experience,
OR
  • An u nrelated Associate's Degree; minimum of three (3) years of related technical/ professional experience,
OR
  • Graduation from high school or an equivalent recognized certification; minimum of four (4) years of related technical/ professional experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Preferred qualification include:
  • One (1) year of experience working with petroleum storage tank systems, including performing compliance inspections or environmental audits,
  • Completion of the 40-hour Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response ( HAZWOPER) training,
  • Experience reading construction blueprints (must specify on application),
  • Experience using FDEP's Florida Inspection Reporting for Storage Tanks (FIRST) application and Microsoft Office Suite, and
  • Experience using Panasonic Touchpad, tablet, digital camera and/or GIS/GPS software (must specify on application).
