Position: Summer Camp Counselor - 77909266

Overview

This full‑time Other Personal Services (OPS) position is based at the Florida Youth Conservation Centers Network (FYCCN). The successful candidate will serve as a Summer Camp Counselor at the Everglades Youth Conservation Center (EYCC) in West Palm Beach. Responsibilities include facilitating camper programs, supervising activities, performing safety inspections, and supporting facility operations.

Experience
  • A High School Diploma is required.
  • Candidates with experience working with youth are preferred.
Description of Duties

Provide support as assigned in the facilitation of summer camp activities.

  • Assist Instructors with program facilitation (shooting sports, hunter safety, archery, bowhunting, freshwater fishing, saltwater fishing, camping skills, canoeing, kayaking, wildlife viewing, wetland exploration, marine exploration, counselor in training, etc.).
  • Facilitate night activities (campfire, board games, water balloon toss, etc.).
  • Help maintain camp educational supplies and equipment; perform inventory as assigned.

Ensure education programs follow American Camp Association (ACA) standards.

  • Supervise daily summer camp activities.
  • Address minor program changes and behavioral issues, escalating to Assistant Camp Director or Director when appropriate. Enforce camp code of conduct.
  • Complete required ACA training and follow all Camp policies on safety, risk management, reporting, etc.
  • Perform safety inspections of equipment and assigned cabins.

Communicate effectively with stakeholders, constituents, and partners.> /p

  • Provide a welcoming experience and positive guest service to visitors.
  • Participate in meetings, mobile phone communications, and other interactions needed to build collaborative relationships.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential files and documentation.
  • Attend staff meetings and professional development sessions.
  • Complete and submit timesheets and required reports promptly.

Assist with facility operations outside of education programs.

  • Assist in food service (dishwashing, stocking, cooking, serving, etc.).
  • Assist with janitorial cleaning of cabins, bathrooms, pavilions, etc.
  • Assist with shower rotations.
  • Assist with weekly camper check‑in and check‑out.
  • Provide supervision coverage as needed.
  • Monitor health and wellness of campers and provide treatment according to certification assigned by the Camp’s Medical Director.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to travel, enter and exit a vehicle or vessel, and withstand exposure to adverse weather conditions.
  • Strong swimming skills: swim without a personal flotation device in deep water over 7 ft in ocean or freshwater conditions.
  • Comfortable handling firearms (training will be provided) and working in loud environments.
  • Work independently, take initiative, and solve problems.
  • Plan, organize, and coordinate self‑assigned and team‑assigned work.
  • Deal professionally and sensitively with a diverse audience at different levels.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of FYCCN’s Four Pillars (shooting sports, ethical angling, safe boating, wildlife exploration) and preferred training theory and instructional design.
  • Knowledge of regional ecosystems and sustainable wildlife practices is preferred.
  • Computer literate in MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and related software.
  • Team player and collaborator with stakeholders, partners, and government agencies.
  • Ability to lift up to 55 lbs.
Position Requirements
  • Applicants must be 19 years of age before May 22 2026.
  • Successful completion of all position‑specific training and certifications before first week of June (e.g., Adult and Pediatric First Aid, CPR, AED, Human Resource Orientation, Canoeing, Kayaking, Fishing, Archery, Range Safety, Waterfront Safety, Behavior Management, Supervision, Emergency Procedures).
  • Employment contingent upon a satisfactory criminal history check (fingerprint‑based) per Florida Statutes.
  • Work includes evenings and weekends.

  • Staff must begin in‑person training on May 22 2026 and be available for all eight weeks of summer camp from June 1 to July 31 (staff off June 28–July 4).
