Overview
The Patient Access Clerk arranges for the efficient and orderly admissions of all patients while ensuring that patient information is collected and that patients are aware of hospital policies and procedures. The clerk interviews incoming patients or representatives and enters information required for admission into the computer database, while also distributing appropriate information to ancillary departments. This role must demonstrate knowledge and skills to provide service appropriate to the age of the patients seen on the unit.
The individual must understand the principles of growth and development over the life span and be able to assess data reflective of the patient’s status, interpret the information needed to identify each patient’s age-specific requirements, and provide the service described in the unit’s policies, procedures, and skills checklist.
- Interview incoming patients or representatives and collect admission information.
- Enter admission data into the computer database and distribute relevant information to ancillary departments.
- Provide service appropriate to the patient’s age and developmental status in accordance with unit policies and procedures.
- Assess patient data and interpret age-specific needs to identify and fulfill required services.
- Adhere to hospital policies and procedures and the unit’s skills checklist.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Medical terminology and billing knowledge preferred, either hospital or physician office.
- Experience with working with physician orders and order entry is a plus.
