General Statement of Duties:

The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) is an advanced practice registered nurse who specializes in providing anesthesia care. The CRNA works with healthcare teams to administer anesthesia care during surgical, diagnostic, therapeutic, and obstetrical procedures. CRNAs assess patients, develop anesthesia care plans, administer anesthesia medications, monitor patients during procedures, and manage post-anesthesia recovery. CRNAs play a crucial role in ensuring patient safety and comfort during medical procedures.

  • Deliver general, regional (e.g., epidural, spinal), local anesthesia, and monitored anesthesia care.
  • Perform airway management techniques including intubation (fiber optic or otherwise), mechanical ventilation, and maintain respiratory function during procedures.
  • Continuously observe vital signs and anesthetic depth, making adjustments as needed to preserve patient stability.
  • Oversee patients during emergence and recovery; administer fluids, medications, or ventilatory support; monitor for complications; and transition them safely to post-anesthesia care units.
  • Utilize acute and chronic pain relief strategies, including use of PCA pumps, epidurals, nerve blocks, or regional anesthesia techniques.
  • Act rapidly in crisis scenarios—such as anaphylaxis, cardiac arrest, or airway obstruction—implementing anesthesia-focused interventions and advanced life support.
  • Select, prepare, and operate invasive/non-invasive monitoring devices, ventilation systems, and anesthetic equipment while ensuring safety through routine checks.
  • Accurately record peri-anesthetic events, anesthesia doses, vital signs, and patient responses. Ensure compliance with regulatory standards, safety protocols, and facility policies.
