TITLE:
WASTEWATER MECHANIC I
DEPARTMENT: WATER POLLUTION
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Performs preventative and corrective maintenance on treatment plant and related equipment. Interprets and works from blueprints, drawings, sketches, plans, specifications, and technical illustrations. Performs skilled repair work on wastewater treatment plant equipment and instruments. Understands the mechanics of machinery. Follows written and oral instructions.

Supervises Mechanic in Training/Mechanic
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES
Exercises independent judgment in solving normal work problems under general supervision of Maintenance Supervisor using standard and special electrical tools and equipment. Inspects wiring and lighting systems, electrical control equipment, meters, outlets, and panels as directed by plant's electrician.
Installs new equipment, interprets oral and written instructions, specifications, and codes. Keeps electronic and written maintenance records; prepares labor and material estimates. Operates all equipment used for cleaning and clearing sewers.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of methods, materials, equipment, and tools used in the maintenance and repair of advanced mechanical systems. Thoroughly knowledgeable in computer operations; able to create spreadsheets and knowledgeable of methods, materials, equipment, and tools used in the word processing documents, and able to enter information into maintenance management system. Knowledgeable of methods, materials, equipment, and tools used in the construction, repair, and operation of engines, pumps, and other mechanical equipment related to waste treatment plant operations and procedures.
Knowledgeable of the operations and internal combustion engines related to waste treatment operations and procedures. Knowledgeable of the operations and internal combustion engines and electrical pump motors; safety principles and practices.
QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or equivalent, four years' experience as a mechanical technician, at least two years of which shall be with similar plant equipment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Possess and maintains a valid Commercials Driver's License - Class B or within the first year of hire date obtain the CDL-Class B license. Have a valid Class I Collections Operators License
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must be able to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds from the floor to waist level, items are often bulky and difficult to handle. Must be able to climb and work off a ladder or scaffold and climb into vehicles having high ground clearance. Must be able to transport self over facility, typically not less than 3 miles per 8-hour shift.
Must be able to ascend and descend stairs, typically not less than 1,100 stairs per 8-hour shift. Must be able to use arms and backs to tighten and loosen nuts and bolts. Must be able to carry a 50-pound toolbox up a flight of stairs. Must be able to work in constricted places.
Must have flexibility to reach, stoop, and bend to work on equipment. Must be able to work outdoors in all types of weather. Must be able to lift bags weighing up to 50 pounds, from floor level up to waist high in an i8-hour shift, typically not less than 45 bags per 8-hour shift. Must be able to bend frequently. Must be able to push a power mower for up to 3 hours per 8-hour shift.
Must be willing and able to work in a team environment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to odorous, wet and/or humid conditions, or risk of electrical shock.
The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet in the office, and moderate to loud in the field.
