Technician Assistant

Job Summary

Under policy direction from the Hospital Manager and Medical Director, the Technician Assistant is responsible to assist the veterinarian, technicians, and other hospital staff. Responsibilities include care and cleaning of patients and facilities, assisting in various technical departments and all other animal care functions. This may include client communication, scheduling appointments, invoicing, and answering the telephone.

Responsibilities and Duties
  • Assist the veterinarian, technicians, and reception staff with client/patient check-in and check-out.
  • Provide nursing care, in-patient care, and animal restraint as needed; alert technicians/doctors if assistance is required.
  • Maintain patient comfort: change bedding, provide blankets, and ensure overall cleanliness.
  • Assist with examinations, assessments, anesthesia & surgical procedures, laboratory work, and digital imaging as directed.
  • Manage medical records, documentation, and client communications; participate in scheduling and invoicing processes as needed.
  • Present and discuss client education materials on nutrition, discharge instructions, medication administration, and general animal care, as directed by a veterinarian.
  • Support reception staff by addressing client requests in a timely manner and ensuring a welcoming environment for clients and pets.
  • Identify dietary requirements and feeding schedules; assist in promoting hospital promotions (e.g., online pharmacy).
Nursing Care
  • Perform animal restraint appropriately; notify a technician/doctor if you are uncomfortable or need assistance.
  • Administer medications as authorized by a veterinarian (observing the six rights).
  • Measure vital signs and report findings as authorized by a veterinarian.
  • Maintain cleanliness and comfort of patients; identify and manage basic patient needs.
  • Stock supplies in hospital departments; ensure accurate patient identification on hospital forms and .
  • Recognize potential health issues and alert a technician when signs indicate pain or the need for immediate assessment.
  • Follow defined Technician Assistant roles and responsibilities; avoid diagnosing over the phone with clients.
  • Demonstrate Technician Assistant-level skills and work with management to progress through levels.
Housekeeping
  • Maintain a clean hospital environment, including staff appearance and clothing.
  • Complete housekeeping and stocking checklists daily.
  • Follow surface disinfection and isolation/cleaning protocols for infectious patients.
  • Report unsafe conditions or safety rule violations to the Hospital Manager.
Records
  • Keep client records, medical history, treatment sheets, and medications accurate and up to date.
  • Follow policies for controlled drugs and ensure client signatures on authorization forms for treatments, laboratory work, euthanasia, etc.
Laboratory
  • Draw blood samples as authorized by the veterinarian; prepare lab request forms; perform basic tests (e.g., stool exams, urinalysis, skin scrapings, slides).
Training
  • Assist in training new hires (kennel assistant and technician assistant).
  • Support trainees through effective communication and presence; discuss training obstacles with the Hospital Manager.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Previous experience or training in a veterinary facility.
  • Friendly, outgoing, people-oriented demeanor; excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Telephone and computer skills, including Microsoft Office and Practice Management software.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks, handle stress, and adapt to changing priorities; intermediate math skills.
  • Professional interaction with all levels of staff.
Education and Experience
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • At least 1 year of veterinary hospital experience
  • Training and client relations experience
Physical Requirements
  • Dependable attendance required; ability to lift up to 40 lbs; ability to sit, walk, squat, bend, stand, reach, type for long periods
  • Must be willing to work long or irregular hours; good visual and hearing abilities; fine motor skills for hospital equipment usage
  • Adhere to dress code with proper scrubs and nametag
Hospital Environment
  • Animal areas may be humid, noisy, and odorous; exposure to pests and zoonotic diseases; possibility of being bitten or scratched
  • Dust and pet dander are common in the practice
