Counsel
We are seeking a skilled litigation attorney to join the Farm Bureau legal team. In this role, you will deliver high‑value legal counsel to Farm Bureau and its affiliates. As Counsel, you will act as a front-line litigation attorney for the company and its affiliates, providing strategic legal advice, resolving complex cases, and if necessary taking matters to trial. Your work will include handling all aspects of litigation with minimal supervision, including but not limited to issuing and analyzing discovery, taking depositions, engaging in resolution negotiations with opposing counsel, and acting as trial or hearing counsel in cases that proceed to trial or hearing.
What You’ll Do:- Defend the organization in first-party litigation matters involving claims of bodily injury, property damage, and insurance coverage.
- Diligently, professionally, and competently prepare and if necessary try litigated cases related to the business of the companies.
- Respond to and resolve requests for legal assistance and advice within the scope of matters assigned and in accord with the organizations’ policies in a prompt, efficient and courteous manner for claims representatives and senior legal and company management.
- Provide legal advice and counsel to the companies regarding matters posing legal liability risk to the organization, including advising and estimating financial risk and exposure, and render opinions necessary to reduce or eliminate such liability or exposure.
- Collaborate with outside counsel to defend the organization’s rights in litigation.
- Conduct legal research and analysis as requested and as needed and assure communication on key issues to more senior attorneys and the enterprise and provide analytical support to senior leadership.
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree and admission to the Iowa Bar required
- Two to five years of relevant experience, with experience in insurance defense preferred. Experience with workers’ compensation is a plus but not required.
- Prior trial experience required.
- Strategic as well as analytical thinking, with effective decision-making skills and focused attention to detail
- Strong interpersonal and communications skills; collaboration with internal clients and external advisors
- Minimal travel is required
