Collins Aerospace is seeking a Quality Engineer to support our Engine Control Systems Business Unit in West Des Moines, IA. In this role, you will manage Quality Engineering processes and projects, perform quality evaluation work, and influence development, modification, and application of subject hardware.
Responsibilities- Maintain a close relationship with customers and program leadership to ensure compliant hardware deliveries.
- Understand customer requirements and communicate key points to internal production teams and supply chain.
- Provide analysis and explanations of inspection plans, methods, and technologies to assure product and process reliability and conformance.
- Prepare, review, and audit First Article Inspections (AS9102).
- Perform escape management processes and lead corrective/preventive action efforts (CAPA).
- Ensure that projects and process control documentation are compliant with requirements, objectives, and contracts.
- Use UPPAP core elements (e.g., PFMEA, MSA, Process Flow and Control Plans, etc.) to identify and recommend managing risk in product development.
- Interpret engineering and specification requirements to prepare, review, and approve specific quality documents such as Quality Plans and Inspection Plans.
- Analyze and recommend root cause and corrective action for nonconformities and design problems for internally produced products and processes.
- Drive process improvements and cost savings utilizing a continuous improvement mindset.
- Participate in customer, third‑party regulatory, and internal audits.
- Support Material Review Board (MRB) activities.
- Review and approve Manufacturing Change Orders (MCO) and Engineering Changes.
- Collaborate internally to ensure quality standards are in effect.
- Serve as a quality resource and advisor for manufacturing floor personnel and stakeholders.
- Support internal and external audits to evaluate quality systems and compliance.
- Ensure compliance with industry regulations and standards (e.g., AS9100).
- Lead structured problem‑solving and root‑cause investigations (e.g., 5 Whys, Fishbone, 8D, RedX, Shainin) for internal and external quality issues.
- Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 2 years of relevant experience or an advanced degree in a related field.
- Prior quality or engineering experience within a manufacturing environment.
- Experience interpreting and understanding technical drawings, reports, manuals, and work instructions.
- Experience in Root Cause & Corrective Action (RCCA) methodologies, including practical application of tools such as 8D, 5 Whys, Ishikawa/Fishbone, Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), and DMAIC.
- Strong working knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) in accordance with ASME Y14.5.
- Experience with cross‑functional RCCA investigations, collaborating with engineering, manufacturing, and suppliers.
- Experience with SAP/ERP.
- Knowledge of Statistical Process Control and Capability analysis.
