To create a class environment favorable to learning and personal growth in addition to meeting the needs of students with Individual Education Plans (IEP); to establish effective rapport with pupils; to motivate pupils to develop functional and academic skills required to meet developmental milestones, in accordance with each pupil’s ability; to establish good relationships with parents and with other staff members.
EssentialsDuties and Responsibilities
- Teaches district approved curriculum
- Develops lesson plans and instructional material and provides individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student
- Translates lesson plans into developmentally appropriate learning experiences
- Communicates regularly with parents outside normal classroom day by means of newsletters, notes, phone calls, conferences, etc.
- Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to achieve an effective learning atmosphere
- Evaluates students’ academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, prepares progress reports, and develops IEPs
- Is available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day
- Plans and coordinates the work of Instructional Assistants and Additional Educational Support, as needed
- Provides individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of the student
- Creates an environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, interest centers, and exhibits of students’ work
- Other duties as assigned

Education and/or Experience• Bachelor’s degree in education.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations• Valid South Carolina Teaching Certificate with certification in Preschool Special Education or Multicategorical.
Language Skills• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
Mathematical Skills• Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
Reasoning Ability• Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
OtherSkills and Abilities
• Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents and community; ability to speak clearly and concisely in written or oral communication.
Work EnvironmentThe work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level is moderate to loud. Duties are performed indoors and occasionally outdoors.
Physical DemandsEmployee frequently walks and stands while performing duties; may bend or twist at the neck and back. Specific vision requirements include peripheral and close vision to read typewritten material. From time to time may be required to lift significant amounts of weight up to and exceeding 25 lbs, such as lifting students or equipment. Reasonable accommodations may be made.
