Job Summary
We are currently looking for 1 substantive Waste Porter within a 5‑week rolling shift pattern, working 6:00 – 14:00 shifts. The service operates 7 days per week so weekend and Bank Holiday working is required. This role is physically demanding and involves collecting bagged clinical and domestic waste, bagged soiled linen, and recyclable waste including cardboard and aluminium items by hand, using electric tugs, trust vehicles and hand trolleys.
The waste and linen must be collected in a timely manner and may involve patient contact. You will work as part of a team of 2–20 people daily.
- Collection of bagged clinical and domestic waste
- Collection of bagged contaminated/soiled linen
- Collection of items for recycling (cardboard/paper, plastics, batteries, ink/toner cartridges, furniture, metals)
- Operate various machinery, including trust vehicles, electric tugs/movers, bin washing machine, waste compactor, cardboard baler and bin tippers
- Assist in loading/unloading of clinical waste bins to external contractor vehicles
- Accept delivery of and store sharps containers in accordance with departmental guidelines
- Complete and maintain the administrative paperwork required to record movements and transfers of clinical and other waste streams
- Drive to other sites to collect items as required
- Undergo all mandatory and departmental training as directed by the Waste and Linen Services Manager
- Occasionally work alongside the main day portering team when necessary

- General standard of education with good literacy and numeracy skills
- Basic computer skills
- WAMITAB or other waste qualifications
- Experience of working as part of a team
- Experience of working within a large organisation
- Previous experience in a waste and/or healthcare environment (desirable)
- Good team player
- Ability to record information accurately
- Ability to carry out lifting and handling tasks within HSE guidelines
- Ability to work on own initiative
- Knowledge of waste collections / recycling (desirable)
