HIGHWAY LABORER/PATROL - SLINGER
The Washington County Highway Department, located in West Bend, is currently recruiting a dedicated full‑time Highway Laborer to work in our Slinger Shop. The Highway Department maintains approximately 515 lane miles of State Trunk Highway under the direction of the State and approximately 390 lane miles of County Trunk Highway. Under the general supervision of the Patrol Superintendent, the Highway Laborer performs skilled and semi‑skilled work involving maintenance, construction and repair of highways, roads, bridges and roadsides.
Duties include patrolling highways and roads, removing debris and obstructions, mowing grass and weeds along roadsides, spraying weeds, cutting bushes and trees, cleaning culverts, and operating equipment for snow removal, salting under icy conditions.
Work Hours
- Winter (mid‑October to mid‑April):
Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM (1st shift) with an extra 20‑minute paid lunch. Assignment to the 3rd shift (Sunday–Thursday, 10:45 PM to 6:45 AM) is possible during the winter season. - Summer (mid‑April to mid‑October):
Monday–Thursday, 6:00 AM to 4:00 PM with a 20‑minute paid lunch. Fridays are off. Four 10‑hour days with a paid lunch.

Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED equivalency.
- A valid Wisconsin driver’s license with a clear driving record for the past three years.
- A valid Wisconsin Commercial Driver’s License Class A (manual transmission) with air brake and "N" endorsement, or the ability to obtain it within six months of hire.
- Two to three years of recent full‑time paid experience in the maintenance and repair of roads, including operation of construction equipment.
- Physical ability to perform strenuous and heavy manual duties.
- Must pass a pre‑employment drug test.

Position Summary
Under the general supervision of the Patrol Superintendent, performs skilled and semi‑skilled work involving maintenance, construction and repair of highways, roads, bridges and roadsides, and operates necessary highway equipment.
Fundamental Duties/Responsibilities
- Operate equipment for snow removal and salting under icy conditions, including clean‑up after storms.
- Concrete and asphalt repairs to roads and bridge decks. Paving and shouldering of roads. Construction of parking lots and roads. Centerline/paint roads.
- Operate a variety of equipment such as front‑end loader, salt spreader, dump truck, grader, air hammer, chainsaws, etc.
- Patrol highways and roads, remove debris and obstructions, inspect for broken or eroded pavement, broken road markers, guardrails and snow fences. May be responsible for a specific section of roadway.
