Position Summary
The Highway Laborer/Operator/Patrol person will perform skilled and semi‑skilled work involving maintenance, construction and repair of highways, roads, bridges and roadsides, and operate necessary highway equipment. The role is located at the Slinger Shop, Washington County Highway Department, West Bend, and is under the general supervision of the Patrol Superintendent.
Fundamental Duties / Responsibilities- Operate equipment for snow removal and salting under icy conditions, including clean‑up after storms.
- Perform concrete and asphalt repairs, paving, and shouldering of roads; construct parking lots and road decks; paint centerlines.
- Operate a variety of equipment (front‑end loader, salt spreader, dump truck, grader, air hammer, chainsaws, etc.).
- Patrol highways and roads, removing debris and obstructions, inspecting for broken pavement, road markers, guardrails, and snow fences.
- Mow grass and weeds along roadside, spray weeds, cut bushes and trees, and clean culverts, bridges, and intersections.
- Inspects roadside maintenance equipment and vehicles; maintains accurate records of fuel, oil, and water supplies.
- Erect, repair, and paint guardrails, guardposts, markers, and snow fences as needed.
- Perform general labor work involving repair, maintenance, and construction of highways and bridges.
- Flag traffic on road maintenance and construction projects.
- Maintain daily reports and distribute work materials; record machine operations accurately.
- Respond to emergency events and perform other duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or GED equivalency.
- Valid Wisconsin driver’s license with a clear driving record for the past three years.
- Valid Wisconsin Commercial Driver’s License Class A (manual transmission) with air brake and "N" endorsement, or the ability to obtain one within six months of hire.
- Two to three years of full‑time recent paid work experience in the maintenance and repair of roads, including operation of construction equipment.
- Strong physical stamina and the ability to perform strenuous, heavy manual duties.
- Must pass a pre‑employment drug test.
Typical starting hourly rate is $28.90 per hour with a Class A CDL. Washington County offers a comprehensive benefits package including Health, Dental, Vision, and Life Insurance;
