Overview

Deputy Sheriff Lieutenant

Position Summary:

A Sworn Lieutenant with the Washington County Sheriff's Office serves as a command-level law enforcement officer responsible for the leadership, supervision, and administration of assigned divisions or units. Lieutenants provide strategic direction, ensure operational effectiveness, maintain compliance with laws, policies, and professional standards, and promote the mission, values, and goals of the Sheriff's Office. Depending on assignment, a Deputy Sheriff Lieutenant may function in an Administrative, Patrol, or Investigative capacity.

Responsibilities

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (All Assignments)

  • Exercise command authority over assigned personnel, units, or functions.
  • Provide leadership, mentoring, and professional development for subordinate supervisors, and sworn and non-sworn personnel.
  • Plan, organize, direct, and evaluate law enforcement operations and programs.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws, Sheriff's Office policies, and best practices.
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and enforcement of policies, procedures, and operational directives.
  • Manage staffing, scheduling, overtime, and resource allocation within assigned areas.
  • Prepare and review reports, evaluations, correspondence, and administrative documentation.
  • Participate in budget preparation as needed, fiscal oversight, and cost-control measures.
  • Address personnel issues including discipline, performance management, and internal investigations as assigned.
  • Ensure that payroll accuracy verification is done for hours worked of assigned staff.
  • Represent the Sheriff's Office at meetings, trainings, court proceedings, and community events.
  • Serve as an incident commander or command-level supervisor during critical incidents, emergencies, and major events.
  • Foster collaboration with internal divisions, allied agencies, and community partners.
  • Perform related duties as assigned by Deputy Sheriff Captain.
Assignment-Specific Responsibilities
  • Administrative Lieutenant
    • Oversee administrative functions such as training, professional standards, policy development, records, technology, or special programs.
    • Coordinate recruitment, hiring processes, onboarding, and promotional activities as assigned.
    • Serve as the agency's designated Records Custodian.
    • Manage compliance with state training standards, certifications, and continuing education requirements.
    • Coordinate mandatory state reporting requirements.
    • Responsible for day-to-day operations of the administrative division.
    • Conduct or oversee internal investigations and ensure due process and policy compliance.
    • Analyze operational data and prepare strategic reports for command staff and county leadership.
    • Assist with long-range planning, grant management, and interagency agreements.
  • Patrol Lieutenant
    • Command patrol shifts ensuring effective delivery of patrol services.
    • Supervise patrol sergeants and monitor field operations for efficiency, safety, and professionalism.
    • Respond to and manage critical incidents, major crimes, pursuits, and large-scale events.
    • Review incident reports, use-of-force reports, pursuits, and other operational documentation.
    • Ensure consistent enforcement of laws, proactive policing strategies, and community engagement.
    • Coordinate with dispatch, jail, investigations, and external agencies during routine and emergent operations.
    • Manage law enforcement contracting services for municipalities.
    • Supervise overall dispatch operations in the absence of the Communications Lieutenant.
  • Investigative Lieutenant
    • Supervise investigative units such as detectives, investigators, task forces, in both Major Crimes and the Multi-Jurisdictional Drug Unit.
    • Assign, monitor, and review criminal investigations to ensure thoroughness, legality, and case solvability.
    • Oversee evidence handling, case management, and compliance with prosecutorial requirements.
