Seasonal Highway Construction Project Inspector

The Seasonal Highway Construction Project Inspector is responsible for inspecting, monitoring, and documenting road and bridge construction contract work in progress to ensure compliance with Wisconsin DOT (WisDOT) standard specifications, Washington County special provisions, project plans, and safety regulations. This role serves as the primary field liaison between the contractor and the project engineer, ensuring quality control for Washington County local highway projects.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Field Inspection:
Perform daily on-site inspection of construction activities (earthwork, grading, paving, concrete, drainage) to verify adherence to contract plans and specifications. - Documentation:
Maintain accurate, detailed daily inspection diaries (daily work reports) documenting weather, contractor forces, equipment, material quantities, and work progress. - Materials Testing:
Conduct or observe field sampling and testing of materials (concrete, soils, aggregate, asphalt) to ensure quality control/quality verification (QC/QV) requirements are met. - Survey Assistance:
Check grade, alignment, and elevation of structures and road surfaces using survey equipment. - Traffic Control/Safety:
Monitor traffic control setups to ensure a safe work zone for the public and workers. - Erosion Control:
Ensure Erosion Control Implementation Plans (ECIP) are followed. - Project Closeout:
Assist in measuring final quantities and compiling, finalizing, and organizing documentation for project closeout.
- WisDOT and Washington County Standards:
Knowledge of the State of Wisconsin Standard Specifications for Highway and Structure Construction and project specific special provisions/plans. - Plan Reading:
Ability to read and interpret engineering design plans, blueprints, and specifications. - Software Proficiency:
Familiarity with MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook) and construction record-keeping software. - Communication:
Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively report non-conforming work to contractors and project engineers. - Physical Stamina:
Ability to work in external, harsh weather conditions, lift heavy testing equipment, and move around uneven, active construction sites.
- Education:
High school diploma or equivalent. - Experience:
2-5+ years of experience in highway construction, materials testing, or inspection. OR be enrolled in an Associate or Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management program. - Driver's License:
Valid Wisconsin driver's license.
- Applicable certifications from the Wisconsin Highway Technician Certification Program (HTCP) (e.g., Concrete, Aggregate, Grading, Asphalt) – a plus, but not required.
- Experience with WisDOT, county, city, or municipal construction programs.
- Familiarity with environmental compliance standards for transportation projects.
