Journeyman Tool and Die Maker – West Babylon/Long Island, New York
Check‑Mate Manufacturing is offering a competitive pay and benefits package for a Journeyman Tool and Die Maker. This position reports to the Tooling Manager and is available to United States citizens or Green Card holders only (no sponsor ships).
Responsibilities• Build, repair, and maintain dies, fixtures, and other tooling in accordance with customer and/or company specifications per control plans.
• Analyze specifications, lay out metal stock, set up and operate machine tools, and fit and assemble parts to make and repair dies, cutting tools, jigs, fixtures, gauges, and machinists’ hand tools.
• Maintain a safe working environment by ensuring compliance with procedures and safety regulations.
- Ability to read tool and die designs and prints.
- Basic shop math and trigonometry.
- Use of precise measuring equipment (micrometers, calipers, gauge blocks, dial indicators, etc.).
- Operation of all standard tool room equipment such as milling machines, drill presses, surface grinders, lathes, etc.; CNC machine set‑up is a plus.
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
- General knowledge of tool and die design, including various tool steels/carbides (a plus).
- Ability to work independently and be self‑motivated.
- Capability to work without supervision and lead small teams when required.
- Collaboration with appropriate outside vendors.
- Training and development of apprentices.
- Effective verbal and written communication.
- High School Diploma or equivalent education or trade school diploma program.
- Journeyman Tool & Die Maker or completion of an apprenticeship (4 years) or advanced manufacturing certificate, with at least 4 years of on‑the‑job training.
- 5 years’ experience in the trade, emphasizing small precision stampings from progressive dies.
- Effective written and verbal communication in English (preferred).
- Knowledge/experience with AutoCAD, Solid Works, and EDM (a plus).
