Position SummaryWe are seeking a 1st Shift
CNC Vertical Turning Lathe (VTL) Operator to work out of our Milwaukee Service Center
. This role involves the setup, adjustment, and operation of various machine tools including vertical turning lathes, horizontal milling machines, engine lathes, radial drill presses, and grinders. The operator will perform progressive machining operations on a wide range of generator and turbine components—typically large parts with critical tolerances and exacting finish requirements. While moderate supervision is provided, the ability to perform independent setups and inspections is essential.
The ideal candidate will have experience working with diverse components such as weldments, castings, shafts, forgings, and gearbox housings.
- Perform full operation of CNC Vertical Turning Lathe (VTL) with Fanuc Control.
- Perform complex setups involving the alignment and securing of large or irregular work pieces.
- Work from engineering drawings, instruction sheets, process drawings, and procedures to execute machining operations.
- Select or adjust speeds, feeds, operational sequences, and tooling to accommodate material conditions or variations from standard procedures.
- Conduct high-tolerance machining operations such as finish boring, milling, thread milling, tapping, etc.
- Interpret and comprehend complex blueprints and apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Set up and verify tooling and attachments, including grinding and adapting tools for special work requirements.
- Use a variety of precision measuring instruments (calipers, micrometers, gauges) to inspect finished parts and ensure dimensional accuracy.
- Monitor and adjust machining parameters during operations to maintain quality and efficiency.
- Assist in diagnosing and resolving tooling issues and machine malfunctions.
- Perform basic maintenance and care of equipment as needed.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in compliance with company standards.
- Complete required documentation, including signoffs and in-process dimensioning records.
- Communicate effectively with team members and supervisors.
- Follow and comply with all safety, quality, and work regulations.
- 3 to 5 years of experience in machine shop practices and techniques. 5 years Boring Bar setup/operator experience strongly preferred.
- Ability to use geometry, algebra, and trigonometric principles together with the use of engineering drawings, specifications, and tables.
- Requires a working knowledge of shop practices and machining fundamentals as acquired through vocational training and/or experience.
- Skilled in interpreting complex blueprints and applying Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
- CAM Software experience a plus.
- Ability to properly operate overhead crane and lift trucks.
- Judgment is needed for the difficult setups, and selection of tooling and fixturing.
- Ability to comprehend machining practices and techniques for fabricating generator and large turbine parts and components of various designs.
