Key Details:

  • Compensation: $22- $26/hour, DOE
  • Start date: mid-March 2026
  • End date: June 2026
  • Location: Oregon and Washington
  • Additional details: Housing will be provided. A vehicle will be provided or mileage reimbursed. GPS units and other field equipment will be provided by WEST; field technicians must be equipped with suitable footwear (rugged hiking boots).
Responsibilities
  • Conduct surveys for Washington ground squirrels by walking transects and locating burrow entrances. May also involve surveys for several rare plant species depending on prior botanical survey experience.
  • Fieldwork will require long days in a wide variety of conditions (30–100 °F).
  • Be comfortable with hazards typical of the environment (walking on uneven and sloped terrain, sharp vegetation, wind, dust, extreme heat and cold).
  • Use of compass, range-finder, tablet, GPS devices, and operation of a four-wheel drive vehicle.
  • Training will be provided.
  • Averaged workweek is ~40 hours, with potential for shorter or longer weeks depending on weather, project, and seasonal workloads.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in natural resources, wildlife management, wildlife biology or equivalent degree preferred.
  • Able to walk long distances (6-9 miles per day) and work independently or with a crew; interact positively with project manager, field supervisor, and coworkers.
  • Preference for experience conducting surveys for Washington ground squirrels and other Oregon/Washington special-status species.
  • Must be punctual, maintain focus for long periods, follow instructions, and perform precise data collection.
  • Physical requirements:

    good physical condition; ability to walk/hike up to 9 miles per day on uneven terrain; exposure to extreme temperatures; may encounter snakes, insects, and other wildlife.
  • Must pass pre-employment background check, drug screening, and DMV check; valid driver’s license required.
