American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Post-Surgical night shift position at an acute care hospital in West Virginia, requiring at least 1 year of experience and a valid WV or compact RN license.
Details- Acute care hospital setting on a 27-bed Med/Surg Post-Surgical unit (Level
7) - Patient population includes post-op orthopedic (knee/hip/shoulder replacement, hip fractures), GU (TURBT, TURP, bladder biopsy), general surgery (hemicolectomy, cholecystectomy, appendectomy, hernia repair), and cath lab patients (post-peripheral interventions, dialysis cath insertions)
- Night shift: 6:45 PM – 7:15 AM (12-hour shifts) with a 30-minute unpaid lunch
- Nurse-to-patient ratios: 1:5 (max
6) on day shift; 1:6 (max
7) on night shift - Charge nurses are present on each shift; night charge may carry a small assignment of 2–3 patients
- Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) are available on the unit: 3 on day shift, 2 on night shift
- Telemetry strips are interpreted by monitor techs on another unit and faxed to Level 7 for RN review — RNs are not required to read their own strips
- Respiratory therapy manages CPAP/BiPap and administers breathing treatments; RNs apply high-flow oxygen as patient condition warrants; no vents on this unit
- Every other weekend required
- May be asked to participate in the holiday rotation on a rotating group schedule
- Floating may be required on a rotating basis to other MS, MS-Tele, or IMC units for lower-acuity patients
- Standby (early dismissal) may be assigned during low census periods; no on-call requirement
- Charting system:
Cerner - 13-week contract
- Active WV or compact RN license required
- Current BLS certification required
- Minimum 1 year of RN experience required
- BSN not required
- Experience with blood transfusions, wound vac changes, and PCA pumps required
- Ability to manage Heparin drips per protocol required
- A copy of an unexpired driver's license is required for consideration
- Any licensing hits must be disclosed at time of consideration
- Must reside more than 50 miles from the facility to be eligible for travel placement
- Responsibilities include wound vac changes, blood transfusions, PCA pump management, and Heparin drip titration per protocol
- Orientation consists of 1 day with a unit educator followed by 1–2 days with a preceptor
- Navy blue or white scrubs required; scrubs are not provided
- Travelers who have previously worked at any WVU Medicine location must have taken a 2-year break before reapplying
- Travelers are not permitted to work within the WVU system for more than one cumulative year without a 2-year break
- No block scheduling or self-scheduling; set schedules are established with staff and adjusted for vacations and holidays as needed
