Job Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a 13-week Med/Surg travel assignment in West Virginia, requiring at least 1 year of RN experience and a WV or compact RN license.
Responsibilities- Acute care Med/Surg unit in a hospital setting with 48 beds
- Common patient diagnoses include pneumonia, UTI, altered mental status, GI bleed, alcohol withdrawal, and falls/weakness
- Nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:5–7 on days and 1:6–8 on nights
- PCTs/CNAs are staffed at approximately 1:10–12 ratio and handle vitals, blood glucose monitoring, EKGs, heart monitor application, bathing, feeding, toileting, and turning and positioning
- Monitor techs located on a separate unit read and monitor telemetry for all patients and notify nurses of any concerns — nurses are not expected to read or interpret telemetry strips
- Respiratory therapy manages all respiratory equipment (BiPAP, CPAP, high-flow O2, breathing treatments, inhalers, ABGs); RNs are responsible for monitoring only
- RNs are required to titrate drips, excluding cardiac drips; common drips include heparin, bumex, and lasix
- Charge nurses are present on each shift; day shift has 2 charges who take patient assignments, night shift charges take assignments only when 2 are scheduled
- 12-hour night shifts (7p–7a), with weekends as needed
- Every other weekend required
- 13-week contract
- Charting via Cerner
- No self-scheduling or block scheduling; schedule is manager-directed with flexibility for requested time off
- Floating may occur to other Med/Surg, Med/Surg-Tele, or IMC units for lower acuity patients
- No on-call or standby requirements
- First-time travelers are welcome to apply
- Candidates must reside more than 50 miles from the facility to be eligible
- Travelers who have previously worked at any WVU Medicine location must have taken a minimum 2-year break before reapplying
- Travelers may not work within the WVU system for longer than one cumulative year before a 2-year break is required
- Orientation consists of 1 day with an educator/computer system training and 1 day with a preceptor
- RN scrub color is navy blue
- May be included in the holiday rotation
- Travelers are expected to be flexible and help fill gaps in the permanent staff schedule
- Active WV or compact RN license required
- Current BLS certification required
- Minimum 1 year of RN experience required
- BSN not required
- Cerner EMR experience preferred
- Copy of unexpired driver's license required for consideration
- Any licensing hits must be disclosed upfront
- 2 references required: 1 supervisor reference and 1 peer or additional supervisor reference (e.g., Charge RN); if the candidate held a permanent position in the last 12 months, one supervisor reference must be from that facility
- Skills checklist completed within the past year required for consideration
