CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Follow an established plan of patient care.
- Assist with admission, transfer, discharge, and transportation of all patients.
- Implement patient safety measures, including assisting patients in moving, sitting, and ambulating.
- Raise side rails as indicated and apply restraints under the direction of a registered nurse.
- Implement fall protocol under the direction of a registered nurse.
- Collect and record vital signs as instructed by the nurse.
- Provide measures to meet patients' comfort needs.
- Collect and prepare specimens according to policy and procedure.
- Administer care and treatments for patients as instructed by the nurse, including but not limited to bathing (am/pm care), perineal, pre‑operative, post‑operative, and post‑mortem care, catheter care, oral hygiene, hot or cold compresses, T.P.R./blood pressures, intake and output, ambulation, turning and positioning, assistive devices, traction set‑up and application, 12‑lead EKG, oral suctioning with Yankauer catheter.
- Perform basic routine duties each shift, such as distributing fresh water, disposing of soiled linen, maintaining a clean and orderly unit, and stocking unit supplies.
- Practice clean and sterile technique in delivering patient care while maintaining body substance isolation.
- Gather information on patient status to identify age‑specific needs and report this to the nurse.
- Maintain an understanding of necessary treatments for each patient and provide appropriate care based on their needs, promoting quality of life.
- Assist with food and nutrition duties, including distribution of snacks and supplements, maintaining fluid restrictions, assisting patients with meals, and informing the nurse of any issues.
- Establish and maintain good rapport with hospital personnel, patients, and families, explaining tasks to patients and providing emotional support.
- Attend and participate in at least three staff meetings annually.
- Respond immediately to patient signal lights, inform nurse of patient problems, and report observations or unusual signs to the charge nurse or team leader.
- Support and adhere to hospital and nursing policies and procedures, institute emergency measures calmly and effectively, report safety or risk management problems, and document all technical skills performed and observations in the medical record.
- Assist with the preceptorship program when required.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date.
- Current WV Certified Nursing Assistant Certification or completion of a hospital‑based Patient Care Technician program or nursing student status.
- One (1) year of clinical experience.
- Required strength and stamina to lift, move, stoop, reach, stand, and walk; engage in heavy or hard work.
- Working closely with others.
- Working protracted or irregular hours.
- Working around biohazards, infectious diseases, deceased patients, hands in water, and electrical hazards associated with patient care equipment.
- Effective communication with staff and patients.
- Adaptability to changing environments.
