This position may qualify for a $2,000 Sign-On Incentive; 50% paid on the completion of first pay period, 50% paid after 6 months of employment.

Workdays & Hours
  • Monday – Thursday 7 AM – 5:30 PM (4–10‑hour shifts)
  • Tuesday – Friday 7 AM – 5:30 PM (4–10‑hour shifts)

This position is a first responder in severe weather conditions/emergencies and may require work after hours, emergency call‑back hours, nights, weekends, holidays, and participation in an on‑call rotation schedule.

Equipment Operator – Stormwater Operations

Position within the City of Fort Worth Transportation and Public Works Department Streets and Stormwater Service Area. Stormwater Operations maintains over 1,000 miles of storm drainpipe and approximately 230 miles of open channels, ensuring our citizens are safe from flooding. Candidates selected for this position will work in the Channel Maintenance Program.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED
  • One (1) year of experience in operation of heavy equipment or construction experience
  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and ability to obtain a Tank Endorsement within six (6) months of hire; operations of a hydro‑mulch vehicle, water truck, and/or vactor as required
Preferred Qualifications
  • Operate complex equipment (dump truck and trailer, pay loader, excavator, compactor, dozer, gradall, etc.) while performing channel maintenance and reconstruction
  • Experience with traffic control
  • Use various hand and power tools (shovels, chainsaw, welder)
Job Responsibilities
  • Operates a variety of motorized equipment including but not limited to front‑end loaders, backhoes, brush trucks, sand trucks, dump trucks, hydro‑mulch truck, water truck, street sweepers, cranes, trenchers, bucket trucks, bush‑hogs, bob‑cats, tractors with various attachments, forklift, and other related maintenance, construction, solid waste and environmental equipment
  • Operates various hand tools
  • Perform skilled and semi‑skilled tasks related to completion of assigned jobs, such as cutting branches, shoveling asphalt, mowing grass
  • Performs preventative maintenance on equipment as assigned; performs pre‑ and post‑trip inspection; completes daily operations reports and timesheets
  • Meets with crew leaders and supervisory personnel to determine job methods and best use of motorized equipment
  • Performs all assigned tasks while adhering to the highest safety standards; works with crew leader to remove any unsafe working conditions; assists with setup of traffic cones and barriers
  • Loads and unloads heavy materials and equipment by hand and with tools or machines

Depending on assignment, positions in this class typically require touching, talking, hearing, seeing, grasping, standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, walking, repetitive motions, climbing, balancing, pushing, pulling and lifting. Incumbents may be exposed to moving mechanical parts, odors, dust, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, intense noises, gases, vibrations. Heavy work may require exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds frequently, and 20 pounds constantly.
