Job Summary

Responsible for maintaining a safe and peaceful environment for all individuals on hospital property. Under general supervision and following standardized policies and procedures, the employee is responsible for maintaining a secure and orderly environment and protecting the grounds and off‑site buildings for Corewell Health, including the safety of all employees, visitors, and patients. This position may require Armed Security Officers to obtain Public Act 330 certification, arrest for misdemeanors, and complete the Michigan State Police PA 330 certification requirements.

Essential

Functions
  • Patrol campus on foot and in vehicle (or on bike as assigned). Assist with unlocking doors inside or providing motor assistance outside, and remain ever observant to suspicious activities and security violations.
  • Accept and perform various duties at assigned posts and assist patients, visitors, and employees while enforcing hospital rules, regulations, and policies.
  • Assist in the Security Operations Center by monitoring phones, alarms, cameras, and radio traffic.
  • Provide statistical safety and security reporting to internal customers and senior management regarding performance, improvement strategies, and compliance issues.
  • Complete assigned or self‑generated reports or logs daily on all activities, irregularities, and investigations; log all calls and lost articles. Send reports to managers and executives.
  • Investigate suspected crimes on hospital grounds and off‑site locations, prepare reports, evaluate data, and cooperate with law enforcement on complaints.
  • Provide security escorts and assistance to employees, visitors, or patients as conditions warrant.
  • Respond to routine inquiries and direct visitors to appropriate areas, preventing unauthorized access to restricted areas.
  • Use proactive non‑violent verbal de‑escalation skills to neutralize volatile situations involving patients, staff, and visitors without escalating into violent incidents.
  • Assist nursing staff with physical management/restraints of patients as ordered by a physician.
  • Use defensive tactics and approved MCOLES force continuum when necessary to safeguard lives and well‑being of staff, patients, and visitors.
  • Possess, carry, and utilize Conduit Electronic Weapons, tasers, and other weapons as determined by Corewell Health policy.
  • Provide CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) or first aid in medical emergencies on the grounds or in public areas until trained medical staff arrive.
  • Assist Emergency Department staff with Hazmat/Decontamination procedures, including donning and doffing of PAPR’s/Tyvek suits and maintaining order in the decontamination area.
  • Report and respond to incidents of fire and/or safety hazards.
  • Inspect firefighting apparatus and extinguishers; assist with scheduled fire, disaster, and other emergency drills.
  • Release patient remains to appropriate agencies or funeral homes.
Additional Duties for PA 330 Locations
  • Diligently exercise Police Authority to arrest for felonies and misdemeanors on Corewell Health property under Michigan Law (PA 330).
  • Diligently exercise citation/ticket writing and ordinance enforcement authority under Michigan Law (PA 330) and local city ordinances.
Required Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 2–3 years of law‑enforcement related work experience as a police officer, hospital security, corporate security, reserve police officer, or military police.
  • Ability to take charge and direct others in emergencies or other dangerous incidents.
  • Approved use of Electronic Control Devices (ECD); requires a valid Carry Pistol License and completion of the specialized Taser Training Course.
  • Driver’s License (State of Michigan, required on hire).
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification by the American Heart Association within 90 days.
  • AED (Automated External Defibrillator) certification within 90 days.
  • First Aid certification within 90 days.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Graduation from a state‑regulated Police Academy.
  • Experience related to crowd control and security.
