Welder ferrous materials by use of electric arc process in all positions per AWS D15.1 and in compliance with prescribed codes and specifications. Perform tests, repairs changes, does improvements and conversions to railcar parts and assemblies. Performs all functions of coil and valve repairs including necessary and essential repair to noted miscellaneous tank car fittings.

Responsibilities
  • Moves, sets up and adjusts equipment and selects rod to perform work assigned.
  • Prepares surface to be welded; burns, gauges, fits, tacks and welds as necessary to complete repair. (Example: Splices, patches, shims, cracks)
  • Locates and tests areas to be welded for leaks by use of soap suds and air rechecking as necessary. (Example: coils)
  • Finishes weld by removing slag and grinding when necessary.
  • Jacks cars, removes trucks, positions to tank rolls, disassembles to repair or gain access to parts needing repair and reassembles as necessary.
  • Assists other workman in placing, fitting and attaching of parts as assigned.
  • Remove, replace, layout, burn, shape ream, and straighten as necessary to perform various repairs to tank shell proper, fittings, couplers, gears, underframe, safety appliances, insulation jacket and related components.
  • Performs minor layouts required in performance of prescribed duties.
  • Lubricates and makes minor repairs to assigned small power, mechanical and hand tools, replacing broken and worn parts. Lubricate, gauge and adjust car parts as necessary.
  • Certifications are held per AWS D15.1.
  • Communicates with supervisor as needed.
  • Keeps work area in a clean and orderly manner.
  • Complies with the established safety policies, supports continuing awareness for safety, and when possible recommends specific changes and improvements to health and safety policies and programs.
  • Installs, tests, repairs, or renews interior and exterior coils, coil cradles and brackets.
  • Uses drawings and sketches to layout coil, bracket, and valve location.
  • Refaces seating surfaces, not to include machining of surfaces.
  • Installs, tests, repairs or renews miscellaneous tank fittings such as safety vent, outlet nozzle, cap, induction pipe, high pressure manway bonnet, and gaskets.
  • Uses oxy-acetylene torch to perform burning operation as required.
  • Clears dirt, grease, etc. from interior of tank.
  • Works with welder on installation of coils as required.
  • Set‑ups and operates bending, threading, and cut‑off equipment to shape and fabricate pipe as required for installation.
  • Communicates with supervisor as needed.
  • Keeps work area in a clean and orderly manner.
  • Complies with the established safety policies, supports continuing awareness for safety.

And when possible recommends specific changes and improvements to health and safety policies and programs.

Qualifications
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as IO instructions, FM instructions, work orders, and AAR Field Manual.
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide two-digit numbers.
  • Ability to reason through and plan work details and procedures to obtain desired results.
Posting Duration

This posting will remain open until the role is filled.

Salary

Min: USD $29.75/Hr.

Max: USD $30.35/Hr.

You may be eligible to participate in the Attendance (PTO) Incentive as well as a Safety and Quality Performance Incentive Plan, the details of which may be provided to the applicant upon hire.

The rate for this position is determined by the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
