Job summary:
This position is responsible for directing the operations of the county shop.
- Manages the general operations of the county shop.
- Schedules and assigns repair work to shop personnel.
- Trains, counsels and supervises shop personnel.
- Manages vehicle fleet repairs and the maintenance of insurance and service records.
- Manages the maintenance of the departmental parts inventory and purchase of all needed equipment and supplies.
- Serves as purchasing agent for the department, including obtaining price quotes and inspecting products for quality and adherence to regulatory standards.
- Prepares the annual operating budget for the shop; monitors expenditures under the current budget.
- Prepares bid specifications for new departmental vehicles and equipment; prepares vehicle specifications for other departments.
- Develops and manages an ongoing preventive maintenance plan for county government vehicles.
- May perform preventive or corrective maintenance procedures.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

The County Manager assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor reviews the work through conferences, reports and observation of shop activities.
GuidelinesGuidelines include relevant federal and state regulations, manufacturer manuals and parts catalogs, wiring diagrams, and county purchasing policies. These guidelines require judgment, selection and interpretation in application.
ComplexityThis position consists of varied managerial and supervisory duties in equipment and automotive maintenance.
Scope and EffectThe purpose of this position is to manage the county shop. Successful performance results in an efficient shop and properly functioning vehicles and equipment for the county.
Personal ContactsContacts are typically with co-workers, vendors, and employees from other departments.
Purpose of ContactsContacts are typically to exchange information, resolve problems, and motivate and influence personnel.
Physical DemandsThe work is typically performed with the employee sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee must occasionally lift light and heavy objects and uses tools requiring a high degree of dexterity.
Work EnvironmentThe work is performed in an office and a vehicle maintenance shop. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and irritating chemicals. The work may require the use of protective goggles or masks.
Supervisory and Management ResponsibilityThis position has direct supervision over all employees in the department.
Minimum Qualifications- Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
- Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the diverse objectives and functions of the subunits in the division/department in order to direct and coordinate work within the division/department, usually interpreted to require three to five years of related experience.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
