Position Information
TxDOT’s Dallas District has job openings for an Intern Maintenance Tech at various offices across the Dallas Metro Area. Our Summer Employment Program provides current high school and college students with a valuable paid hands‑on experience. At TxDOT, you will join a diverse workforce that is passionate about their careers. This position is for an internship during the months of May‑August with the potential for a year‑round part‑time position.
Job Details
Minimum Salary: $18.00 per hour
Maximum Salary: $20.00 per hour
Pay Basis:
Hourly (FLSA Non‑exempt)
Work Locations:
Dallas District Headquarters – 4777 EAST HIGHWAY 80, Mesquite 75150
Other Locations: UST‑Texas‑Denton, UST‑Texas‑Waxahachie, UST‑Texas‑Mckinney
Shift: 1st Shift, Mon‑Fri, 40‑hour work week

Responsibilities
Entry‑level and routine maintenance work, including:
- Plant, landscape, and roadside maintenance and clean‑up.
- Maintenance of comfort stations and rights‑of‑way, minor equipment repair.
- Assist in repairing and erecting signs, drums, barricades, and other related duties.
- Warehouse and supply functions.
- Pothole, roadway shoulder, guardrail, and sign repairs.
- Traffic control including cone placement, flagging.
- Operate light equipment.
- Maintain picnic and rest areas.
- Move/pick up litter and debris.
- Perform minor equipment repairs, plant and landscape maintenance such as trimming, mowing, fertilizing, watering.
- Perform some carpentry and clerical duties.
- Repair and install posts and mailbox supports.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
Must be a student in high school or another educational institution or accepted into a college, university or educational institution.
Other
Conditions:
- Must be at least 16 years of age and a student currently enrolled in high school or any institution of higher education, including trade/vocational schools.
- Employees at least 18 years of age with a valid driver’s license may be assigned driving duties and may use power tools.
Working Conditions:
- Required to wear a hard hat and other personal protective equipment.
- Subject to outside environmental conditions; no effective weather protection.
- Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
- Balancing, walking, standing, and crouching on various surfaces.
- Kneeling and bending to rest on knees.
- Reaching and extending arms and hands in any direction.
- Prolonged standing periods.
- Close visual acuity for inspection of small defects and use of measurement devices.
- Operate machines such as drill presses, power saws, and mills.
- Job is physically demanding and requires a pre‑employment physical.
- Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions; subject to random drug testing.
