Position: Construction Inspector I

Job Description – Construction Inspector I or II (2502689)

TxDOT's Dallas District is seeking a Construction Inspector to join us in the inspection and oversight of essential projects in the North‑Central region. Depending on skill level, the employee will perform all facets of bridge inspection, roadway inspection, environmental compliance, and materials inspection on projects ranging from small‑scale to large‑scale. Duties include fieldwork, driving a state vehicle, and performing as the sole inspector on many projects.

The position is located in the Ellis/Navarro Area Office and may require late or night shifts as needed.

Salary
  • Construction Inspector I (B18): $45,521 – $71,055
  • Construction Inspector II (B19): $48,244 – $76,028
Responsibilities
  • Calculates payments due to contractors for work completed.
  • Ensures contractors build roadways, bridges, and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Monitors project phasing and traffic‑control plans; inspects barricades and traffic‑control devices as required.
  • Observes and inspects ongoing construction work.
  • Oversees construction record‑keeping; recommends payments, change orders, and prepares reports.
  • Prepares monthly and final estimates.
  • Assists in engineering‑related data collection, inspections, assessments, analysis, and review activities for plan development by others.
  • Resolves differences in interpretation of plans and specifications.
  • Documents work progress and issues throughout the scope of the project and performs additional duties as assigned.
  • Handles problem calls from producers, suppliers, inspectors, and construction project field personnel, serves as a lead worker or project leader, and trains and mentors less experienced inspectors (Construction Inspector II).
Minimum Qualifications

Education: High School Graduate or equivalent in general high‑school studies.

Experience:

  • Construction Inspector I: No experience required.
  • Construction Inspector II: 1 year of construction, construction inspection, engineering support, maintenance, repairs, materials or process inspection, or transportation engineering support‑related experience.

Experience can be satisfied by full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent; related college education or technical training may be substituted on a year‑per‑year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications are accepted.

Licenses and

Certifications:

Valid driver’s license; this position requires driving a state vehicle.

Additional Competencies for Construction Inspector II
  • Extensive knowledge of applicable plans, specifications, and estimates preparation, review, processing, and compliance requirements.
  • Extensive knowledge of inspection methods, procedures, and techniques.
  • Extensive knowledge of testing methods, processes, and procedures.
  • Basic traffic management and control procedures.
  • The use of computers and applicable programs, applications, and systems.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Subject to outdoor environmental conditions; no effective weather protection.
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32°F or above 100°F for more than one hour.
  • Subject to noise.
  • Subject to hazards such as moving vehicles, mechanical parts, high places, heat, or chemicals.
  • Required to wear protective gear—respirator, hard hat, or other devices.
  • Sedentary work; lift up to 10 lbs at a time and occasionally carry files or small tools.
  • Walking, standing, and crouching on various surfaces without falling.
  • Job identified as physically demanding; requires a pre‑employment physical.
  • Must pass a drug test before employment; subject to random drug testing. Medical marijuana is not a valid medical explanation for a positive result under current regulations.
