** PRIMARY FUNCTIONS
** Provides technical assistance to the surgeon in the Surgery Complex. Performs services requiring technical or manual skills under the direction of the surgeon or physician in the Surgery Complex. Is also responsible for cleaning, assembling, and sterilizing all equipment, supplies, and/or instruments.
** ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
** 1. Follows written procedures for chemical/steam sterilization. Knows responsibilities and the necessity for chemical and biological monitoring. Cleans and decontaminates patient use items by taking apart instruments, rinsing and soaking instruments, and using washing/sterilization equipment. Assists with clean up, wrapping, re-sterilizing, and disinfecting of equipment after the surgery. Assembles, packages, and/or terminally sterilizes patient use items.
2. Participates in a collaborative effort with other nursing staff to maintain the continuity of care of the surgical patient. Assists with limited patient care in the operating, recovery, and procedure rooms, as directed and supervised by a Surgeon. Provides assistance with continuous patient flow. Understands the patient’s medical and surgical history. Utilizes critical thinking to determine the effect of a patient’s history on the surgical procedure.
Anticipates equipment needed and potential complications.
3. Hands instruments and supplies to the surgeon. Anticipates surgeon’s needs with regard to technique and necessary equipment. Holds retractors, cuts suture, and performs other tasks as directed by the surgeon during the operation. Maintains a sterile environment during the surgical process. Carries out medical/surgical asepsis during treatments/procedures. Accurately completes operating room counts according to policy.
4. Prepares room in a timely manner with all anticipated instruments, sutures, supplies, and equipment for each individual surgical procedure. Adapts procedures to meet the age specific needs of patients for treatment. Transports patients and assists with operating room set-up, cleaning, and turnovers.
5. Assists team members in positioning, prepping, and draping patients for surgical procedures. This includes proper positioning of the patient as directed by the surgeon, padding of pressure points, ensuring circulation is not impaired, guarding against nerve damage, and evaluating the patient upon completion of the procedure for any possible damage from positioning. Any abnormal conditions are reported to the surgeon immediately.
Reports unanticipated patient responses of care to the Physician and Manager.
6. Provides visualization of the operative site through: appropriate placement and securing of retractors (with or without padding), packing with sponges, digital manipulation of tissue, manipulation of suture materials (i.e. tags, loops, running stitch, etc.), and proper use of body mechanics to prevent obstruction of the surgeons view.
7. Utilizes appropriate techniques to assist with hemostasis. This includes clamping or cauterizing tissue or vessels, tying and/or legating clamped tissue or vessels, placing local hemostatic agents, applying hemostatic clips, and temporarily applying (1) tourniquets and demonstrating awareness of the indications/contraindications for use with knowledge of side effects, (2) non-crushing clamps, and (3) direct digital pressure.
8. Utilizes appropriate techniques to assist with closure of body planes. This includes utilizing running or interrupted subcutaneous sutures with absorbable or non-absorbable material, utilizing subcuticular closure technique with or without adhesive skin closure strips, closing skin with method indicated by surgeon (i.e. suture, staples, etc), and postoperative subcutaneous injection of local anesthetic agent as directed by the surgeon.
