Location: Town of Wausau

This position will be posted until filled. The Mechanic I performs skilled work in the maintenance and repair of diesel transit buses, cutaway vans and non-revenue vehicles. The work involves performing a variety of mechanical, electrical, plumbing and body repairs. The work is performed in accordance with established procedures and accepted trade practices and requires safe work habits. The incumbent must have a working knowledge of internal combustion engines, hazards and safety precautions of the trade and an ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions effectively.

Candidates who have completed formal course work in heavy equipment and truck repair, have at least one year of professional experience in mechanic repair, and exhibit the knowledge, skills, and abilities beyond Mechanic I level may qualify to be hired as a Mechanic II.

  • Operate a laptop computer to process work orders using the City’s fleet management program, diagnose diesel engine fuel management systems, vehicle body management systems, and hybrid drive equipment.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and general servicing to vehicles including changing fluids, greasing, safety inspections, etc.
  • Perform preventative maintenance, general repair work on transit vehicles, components, and systems, in accordance with established industry procedures including:
  • Exchange, retrieve, repair, or rebuild components in disabled buses.
  • Repair diesel buses (maintain, troubleshoot, rebuild, or exchange components).
  • Safely operate and maintain brake lathe, hoist, forklift, floor scrubber, etc.
  • Safely perform welding and braising operations.
  • Document and maintain maintenance logs and all work performed including parts used on work orders.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
  • Maintain and repair transit support equipment including small engine equipment and non-revenue vehicles.
  • Enter work orders and track parts, labor, and maintenance reasons on all vehicles (RTA).
  • Provide back-up to co-workers as needed.
  • Must be able to react to change productively and handle other tasks as assigned.
  • Fuel and wash buses (as necessary).
  • Perform snow removal duties and other facility or grounds maintenance (as needed) for the transit facilities.

Education and Experience Requirements

High school diploma or GED. Related vocational schooling or advanced degrees and training preferred. Must be able to obtain and maintain valid WI Commercial Driver’s License Class B with passenger “P” endorsement within six (6) months of hire (paid training provided). Air brake restriction must also be removed. Must be able to obtain and maintain Fed Med Certificate.

Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Strong aptitude for mechanical and automotive/heavy truck computer and electrical systems.
  • Knowledge of the principles of operation, maintenance, and repair of transit buses.
  • Troubleshoots and performs basic and difficult repairs including complete overhauls to engines, transmissions, electrical systems, pneumatic systems, brakes, axles, wheelchair lifts, ramps and related securement, work schedules, bus schedules, street maps and directions, and all other supporting systems.
  • The ability to use and understand computer software used for proper vehicle system malfunction diagnostics.
  • Must submit to FTA required drug and alcohol testing requirements including but not limited to pre-employment, post-accident, random and reasonable suspension testing as a condition of employment.
  • Ability to work efficiently with computers, schematics, charts, manuals, and written or verbal instruction.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and be able to work with little or no supervision t be able to take direction and work well with others.
  • Must be able to maintain clean work areas, equipment, and tools.
  • Awareness of occupational hazards, environmental regulations, company policies, safe work practices and standard operating procedures.
  • Must be able to occasionally work a flexible schedule.
