Overview

This is a skilled labor position that performs various building, construction and maintenance duties including plumbing, backflow, janitorial, electrical, HVAC, masonry and carpentry depending on specialty and license as well as the associated administrative work.

Schedule:

M-F, 7am-3:30pm. Required occasional nights and weekends for emergencies and business needs. Starting salary:
Depending on qualifications, $29.7416-$35.7242.

Essential Duties

Essential Duties: The job functions listed herein are illustrative and not exclusive; duties may change with the needs of the employer and/or the position. The employee may be asked to perform different or additional tasks as required.

  • Opens, closes and cleans park shelters, restrooms and buildings.
  • Performs building maintenance including plumbing, electrical, HVAC, janitorial, carpentry, locksets, painting interiors and exteriors, masonry and stonework.
  • Monitors safe use of tools and equipment and corrects unsafe practices.
  • Uses hand and power tools; operates power equipment (e.g., mowers, tractors, loaders, trucks, snowplows).
  • Performs snow and ice removal; salts sidewalks.
  • Sets up and takes down holiday lights and displays.
  • Installs park signs, light poles, basketball posts, backboards and related items.
  • Assists in training of new full/part-time employees and seasonals.
  • Assists in planning and coordination of Special Events and Recreation programs.
  • Sets up and takes down for Special Events and Recreation programs/rentals.
  • Designs and fabricates custom structures and equipment for Recreation programs and Special Events.
  • Repairs and maintains boat piers, sound systems, toboggan runs and other structures/facilities.
  • Performs rubbish collection and recycling; marks underground utilities within parks.
  • Works in confined spaces.
  • Orders and requisitions materials within budget; obtains quotes for professional services.
  • May require weekend and holiday work hours; attends seminars/workshops as needed to maintain certifications and licenses.

Plumbing/Backflow:

  • Performs plumbing construction, maintenance, repairs and new installations.
  • Master Plumber Licensure within 18 months of hire.
  • WI Backflow tester certification within one year of hire.
  • Tests, inspects and repairs backflow devices; maintains operations on pools, fountains, toilets, faucets, urinals, irrigation systems and drinking fountains.
  • Assists other City Departments with plumbing maintenance, repairs and installations.
  • Winterizes all park restrooms, pools, fountains, irrigation systems and drinking fountains; maintains inventory and records of work performed.
Typical Qualifications

Graduation from a 2-year college or technical training school plus Certification and/or Licensure in designated specialty and at least 4 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience providing the following knowledge, abilities and skills:

  • Knowledge of
    :
    Materials, methods and equipment used in building maintenance and construction; safety precautions; applicable statutes and codes; general office equipment and software.
  • Ability to
    :
    Work independently; interpret plans; carry out instructions; multitask and meet deadlines; work in confined spaces; perform physical tasks; establish relationships with staff and the public; train staff; maintain records.
  • Skill in
    :
    Use of power tools and machinery; oral and written communications; leadership and problem solving.
  • Necessary Special Requirements
    :
    Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) or Certified Pool Operator (CPO) within 1 year of hire; ability to pass drug/alcohol tests pre/post hire; CPR/AED/First Aid within 1 year;
    Forklift certification within 1 year;
