Position: Anticipated: Middle School (6-8) English Language Development (ELD) Math Teacher

Position Overview:

This position serves secondary students who are simultaneously developing English proficiency and foundational mathematical understanding, including English Learners (EL) and Students with Limited or Interrupted Formal Education (SLIFE). The teacher provides intensive, strategically accelerated instruction to address significant gaps in numeracy and academic language, with the goal of preparing students for successful participation in grade-level mathematics.

Position Criteria:
  • Valid Iowa Teaching License
  • K-12 English Language Learners, required
  • K-8 Math or 5-8 MS Mathematics or 5-12 Math, required
Performance Criteria:
Instruction & Student Learning
  • Provide direct, intensive mathematics instruction focused on essential K-8 standards for EL and SLIFE students in grades 6-8.
  • Develop and implement accelerated learning pathways that prioritize essential standards and build deep conceptual understanding to prepare students for grade-level mathematics.
  • Integrate mathematics instruction with explicit English language development in reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
  • Employ evidence-based instructional strategies that support emergent readers and students with limited or interrupted formal education within mathematics instruction.
  • Utilize research-based foundational numeracy practices to develop number sense, operations fluency, and mathematical reasoning.
  • Scaffold learning through modeling, visual supports, structured discourse, feedback, and gradual release of responsibility.
  • Differentiate instruction to address varied academic backgrounds, literacy levels, and prior schooling experiences.
Assessment & Data-Driven Decision Making
  • Administer placement assessments to determine students’ language acquisition and mathematical readiness levels.
  • Monitor student growth in both mathematics proficiency and English language development.
  • Use formative assessments and progress monitoring tools to drive instructional decisions.
  • Maintain accurate, standards-referenced reporting practices and provide timely, actionable feedback to students.
  • Participate in the district’s MTSS process to analyze student needs and design targeted instruction and interventions.
Collaboration & Systems Work
  • Collaborate closely with general education math teachers to align instruction and prepare students for successful participation in grade-level mathematics.
  • Collaborate with district and building leadership, as well as math teachers and interventionists, to determine readiness for transition into grade-level mathematics.
  • Work in partnership with ESOL teachers, coaches, and curriculum support staff to align language and content instruction.
  • Actively participate in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs).
  • Support classroom teachers in implementing best practices for English Language Learners in mathematics settings.
Family & Community Engagement
  • Support families as they acclimate to the school system.
  • Build strong, culturally responsive relationships with students and families.
Professional Growth & Leadership
  • Demonstrate commitment to ongoing professional learning aligned to the Iowa Teaching Standards and district professional development expectations.
  • Engage in current research related to: mathematics intervention and acceleration, language acquisition, and SLIFE student support.
  • Provide or support professional development in ESOL and language-rich math practices as appropriate.
