Student Support Mentor (SEMH)

Salary: £97.80 – £150 per day
Salary dependent on experience and qualifications. Higher rates are reserved for candidates with substantial SEMH experience and/or relevant training such a recognised Level 2 or 3 Teaching Assistant qualification (or equivalent). Pay is determined in line with school expectations and Agency Worker Regulations (AWR), where applicable.
About the Role
Teach Now is recruiting on behalf of a well-regarded secondary school in Watford, Hertfordshire, rated “Good” by Ofsted, for a Student Support Mentor (SEMH) to join their pastoral team from September 2026.
This full-time role involves providing targeted mentoring and pastoral support to a small group of female students with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. The students supported in this role may experience anxiety, emotional dysregulation and barriers to learning, and require consistent support to re-engage successfully with school and lessons.
Due to the nature of the role supporting a small group of female students, the position would be particularly well suited to a female Student Support Mentor who can act as a positive and trusted role model.
You will play a key role in building strong relationships, promoting emotional regulation and supporting students to reintegrate into lessons, working closely with the school’s safeguarding, pastoral and SEN teams.

Candidate Requirements
To be considered for this role, applicants must:
• Have experience supporting young people with SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) needs
• Be confident supporting students with anxiety, emotional regulation challenges and barriers to learning
• Have experience working with vulnerable young people or those from complex backgrounds
• Demonstrate the ability to build trusting, supportive relationships with students
• Be resilient, patient and calm when working in challenging situations
• Have strong communication and teamwork skills
• Experience working in schools, youth services, alternative provision, social care or mentoring roles would be highly beneficial.
Key Responsibilities
• Provide 1:1 and small group mentoring for female students with SEMH needs
• Support students who experience anxiety around attending or entering lessons
• Act as a consistent and positive role model for vulnerable students
• Build strong relationships that promote confidence, resilience and emotional wellbeing
• Work closely with the Safeguarding, Pastoral and SEN teams to support vulnerable students
• Support students who may be involved with social services, care placements or external agencies
• Maintain accurate records of interventions, wellbeing concerns and student progress
• Help students develop strategies to manage emotions and re-engage with learning
• Support teachers to ensure students can successfully reintegrate into mainstream lessons
