Overview
The role is a full time, fixed term position as a Trust Resident Doctor in General Surgery. Duties include the management and care of emergency general surgery patients and elective general surgery subspecialty patients. The initial subspecialty covered is colorectal surgery with the opportunity by mutual consent to rotate to other specialties after a minimum of 6 months. The job is based at Watford General Hospital with some work across sites in St Albans City Hospital.
Responsibilities- Work to a 1:10 on-call duty rota, produced in advance, including prospective cover for annual leave for colleagues.
- See, diagnose, and treat General Surgical patients; refer to other clinicians or general practitioners where appropriate and theatre, including CEPOD.
- Work closely with nursing, professional, technical, administrative and support staff.
- With Registrars, ensure a high standard of care is delivered to patients and organise safe ward cover at Watford General Hospital.
- Ensure adequate clinical notes are made in accordance with good medical practice.
- On occasion, assist in teaching medical students.

- MEDICAL AND CLINICAL AUDIT:
The department is committed to Medical and Clinical Audit; participation is expected. - STUDY AND TRAINING:
Formulate clinical projects and interpret audit findings; discussion of study leave with consultants early in appointment. - RESEARCH:
Trainees will be encouraged to pursue appropriate research interests. - POSTGRADUATE MEDICAL CENTRE:
Active centres on both sites with facilities and training; access to online literature and resources; regular meetings.
The post holder will be indemnified by the trust for NHS work undertaken as part of the contract. It is advised to obtain professional defence cover for activities outside the NHS. The post is covered by the Medical and Dental Terms and Conditions of Service and subject to the policies of West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust.
