Overview
West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is seeking to appoint a consultant in obstetrics and gynaecology on a 12-month fixed term basis to support and strengthen the delivery of high-quality women's health services across the Trust.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced obstetrician and gynaecologist with strong generalist skills to work within one of the largest Women’s Service Departments in the South East of England. The successful applicant will join a supportive forward-looking consultant body delivering elective and emergency obstetrics and gynaecology care across the acute and community settings.
The post-holder will contribute fully to obstetrics and gynaecology activity, including labour ward, emergency gynaecology, elective theatre lists, outpatient clinics, and resident on-call commitments. The role includes significant opportunities for clinical leadership, service development, teaching, governance, and quality improvement.

About usThe post holder will contribute to a comprehensive obstetrics and gynaecology service, with duties structured around a defined job plan that includes direct clinical care, supporting professional activities, and on-call commitments.
Key responsibilities include:
- Labour Ward Cover: Daytime labour ward duties (08:00-20:00) on an alternate-week basis.
- Outpatient and Specialist Clinics: Weekly outpatient hysteroscopy clinics.
- Antenatal clinics on a regular weekly basis.
- Weekly Rapid Access Gynaecology clinic.
- Growth scan clinics on an alternate-week basis.
- Bereavement clinics on an alternate-week basis.
Theatre Commitments:
- Participation in gynaecology theatre lists, including a scheduled theatre session at Watford once per month.
- Participation in the Gynaecology "Hot Week" rota (1 in 16).
Supporting Professional Activities (SPA):
- Dedicated SPA time provided on alternate weeks for audit, teaching, governance, CPD, and service development.
On-Call Commitments:
- Weekend on-call duties shared on a rotational basis (approximately 1 in 10 for Saturdays and Sundays).

- Experience in General Obstetrics equivalent to that required for a UKCCT.
- Thorough understanding of principles of medical audit.
- MBBS or Equivalent
- GMC
- MRCOG
- ATSM Advanced Labour Ward Practice
- ATSM - Fertility or equivalent
- Surgery or equivalent
- Ability to organise and develop a service.
- Previous experience or proven interest in teaching/medical education.
- Ability to manage and lead specialist unit, directorate and working parties as appropriate, with management training
- Willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional or national levels.
