The SHO in Obstetrics & Gynaecology provides junior doctor level clinical care across obstetric and gynaecological services under the supervision of Senior Registrars and Consultants.
This is a training post (or equivalent trust-grade post) and forms part of the department's on-call rota, contributing to the delivery of safe, high-quality care for women attending maternity, antenatal, postnatal and gynaecology services.
Main duties of the job Clinical Care- Participate in daily ward rounds for antenatal, postnatal and gynaecology inpatients.
- Assess and manage patients presenting to antenatal triage/day assessment units.
- Support labour ward and delivery suite care, including assisting in normal deliveries and emergencies.
- Attend gynaecology outpatient clinics and assist in elective and emergency theatre sessions.
- Contribute to assessment and management of women presenting via Emergency Department with gynaecological or early pregnancy concerns.
- Undertake procedures and patient care tasks appropriate for SHO level under senior supervision.
Participate fully in the department's on-call rota, including evenings, nights, weekends and bank holidays.
- Provide SHO level cover for obstetric and gynaecology emergencies when on duty, escalating complex clinical situations to registrars/consultants.
- Provide medical input for acute admissions on the labour ward, antenatal unit, gynaecology ward and emergency gynaecology services.
- Communicate effectively with patients, relatives, midwives, nursing staff and the multi-disciplinary team.
- Provide handover to colleagues at shift changes to ensure continuity of care.
Maintain accurate, contemporaneous clinical notes and ensure discharge summaries are completed when required.
