Position Overview:Lake Area Technical College seeks a qualified Nursing Instructor to support the delivery of high-quality nursing education aligned with the mission and philosophy of the College and Nursing Department. The instructor is a registered nurse with a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in nursing (master’s preferred), a current South Dakota RN license, at least three years of clinical experience, and the ability to obtain a South Dakota post‑secondary teaching certificate.
This role involves teaching selected theory courses, supervising and evaluating students in clinical settings, advising students, and contributing to curriculum design, implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement based on program outcomes and quality standards. The Nursing Instructor works collaboratively with faculty, administration, and clinical partners; integrates technology and evidence‑based practice into instruction; maintains clinical competence through professional development; participates in faculty meetings, committees, recruitment, and employer engagement activities;
and demonstrates strong interpersonal skills, professional integrity, and a commitment to student success and lifelong learning.
- A registered nurse with a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in nursing with a master's degree in nursing preferred.
- Current license to practice as a registered nurse in South Dakota.
- Ability to obtain a valid South Dakota post‑secondary teaching certificate.
- Minimum of three years of clinical experience. (Includes CMA, CNA).

- Possesses the ability to motivate students to become lifelong learners.
- Works in partnership with other faculty members to create an effective teaching team.

- Displays knowledge of the role and scope of practice of the licensed registered nurse and practical nurse.
- Participates in activities which facilitate the faculty members’ own nursing competence and professional expertise in the area of teaching responsibility and maintains clinical competence.
Reports to: Nursing Program Director, Dean of Academics, Vice President
Performance Responsibilities:- Assists in the designing, planning, implementation, and evaluation of the curriculum.
- Develops, implements, evaluates and updates the purpose, philosophy and outcomes.
- Evaluates the curriculum using a systematic plan based on program outcomes and quality improvement.
- Develop, evaluates and revises the student admission, progression, retention, and graduation policies consistent with the policies of the governing institution.
- Evaluates student achievement of curricular objectives and outcomes related to nursing knowledge and practice.
- Provides student evaluation of teaching effectiveness.
- Teaches selected theory content and supervises, instructs, and evaluates students in the clinical area.
- Contributes to the development and maintenance of collegial relationships with Lake Area Tech and clinical agency staff.
- Participates in academic advising and guidance.
- Monitors the instruction of selected preceptors.
- Participates in nursing faculty meetings.
- Fosters and upholds to policies of Lake Area Tech and the specific policies of the nursing department.
- Serves on selected Lake Area Tech committees.
- Participates in student recruitment activities and employer events.
- Serves as a course coordinator for selected courses.
- Other duties as assigned.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary and benefits set by the Watertown School District.
SALARY: 186‑day contract. Salary and benefits set by the Watertown Board of Education in accordance with the state post‑secondary salary formula. Evening and weekend hours required for clinical instruction.
