Responsibilities
- Supervises the day-to-day operations of the pharmacy.
- Supervises the work of pharmacy supportive staff.
- Monitors the day-to-day management and acquisition of medications and supplies.
- Facilitates problem solving of pharmacy issues.
- Assists with department/division quality improvement activities.
- Provides feedback on performance for all pharmacy personnel.
- Ensures daily and weekly computer maintenance functions performed (input as assigned).
- Offers suggestions to improve services and viable options to resolve problems.
- Interpret medication orders and maintain patient profile system.
- Schedule administration of medications and evaluate patient records for DUR/DUE.
- Compounds/supervises compounding of prescriptions and intravenous admixtures.
- Takes appropriate action in response to computer-identified interactions.
- Demonstrate understanding of reimbursement guidelines and incorporate them into dispensing activities.
- Ensure current billing of patient medications and check all selections prior to dispensing.
- Monitor patient response to medications and effectiveness of therapy.
- Communicate with physicians and team members regarding patient response and dosing levels.
- Participate in patient rounds and operate clinical pharmacy programs within protocols.
- Intervene on behalf of the patient as appropriate to access appropriate care within the health system.
- Ensure the patient has all supplies, information, knowledge and skills to carry out the drug therapy plan.
- Provide clinical medication information to medical and nursing staff and respond to drug information requests.
- Prepare and present drug therapy–related educational programs/in‑services to patients and other health care providers as needed.
- Assess medication and supply inventory levels daily and consider contractual agreements prior to ordering.
- Obtain appropriate order authorization (e.g., P.O. number) and order medications from appropriate source.
- Receive and check in medications and supplies, complete documentation of inventory received, and research discrepancies.
- Process returns and credits, code and bill invoices to appropriate departments, and maintain necessary purchasing documentation.
- Graduate from an accredited college of pharmacy (B.S. or Pharm.
D).
