Are you looking for a seasonal position this summer where you can have a positive impact on the lives of Connecticut’s youth? If so, we invite you to apply to join our team as a Buildings and Grounds Patrol Officer at Camp Harkness!

The State of Connecticut, Department of Developmental Services (DDS) – South Region - is currently recruiting six (6) seasonal job opportunities for Building and Grounds Patrol Officers to join our team at Camp Harkness located in Waterford, CT.

These are seasonal positions, and DDS permanent employees will not be considered. Applicants must be able to work the full season and must complete all DDS required training prior to starting. Please refer to the end date for each position below.

Position Highlights

There will be three (3) full-time and three (3) part-time shift available for first, second, and third shift.

  • PCN 142012:
    Sunday & Monday: 2:00 p.m.

    - 12:30 a.m. (Regular Days Off: Tuesday - Saturday)
  • PCN 142013:
    Tuesday - Saturday: 3:00 p.m.

    - 11:30 p.m. (Regular Days Off: Sunday & Monday)
  • PCN 141996:
    Sunday & Monday: 7:00 a.m.

    - 5:30 p.m. (Regular Days Off: Tuesday - Saturday)
  • PCN 142011:
    Tuesday - Saturday: 7:00 a.m.

    - 3:30 p.m. (Regular Days Off: Sunday & Monday)
  • PCN 142010:
    Friday - Saturday: 9:00 p.m.

    - 7:30 a.m. (Regular Days Off: Sunday - Thursday)
  • PCN 141998:
    Sunday - Thursday: 11:00 p.m.

    - 7:30 a.m. (Regular Days Off: Friday & Saturday)
  • Duration:
    These are seasonal positions. PCN 142012 is expected to end no later than October 15, 2026, while the remaining positions are expected to end no later than November 12, 2026.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Any experience or training which would provide the skills and abilities indicated above.
Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates who possess:

  • Experience working in the security field.
  • Experience working or volunteering with people with disabilities.
  • Experience working in a camp, park, or other recreational setting.
Special Requirements
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's license.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to obtain and maintain a Standard First Aid Certificate and/or CPR certification.

Physical Requirements
  • In addition to the checking of references and of facts stated in the application, a thorough background investigation of each candidate may be made before persons are certified for appointment.
  • Incumbents in this class must have general good health, be free from any disease or injury which would impair health or usefulness and possess and retain sufficient physical strength, stamina, agility, endurance and visual and auditory acuity required to perform all the duties of the class.
  • Applicants may be required to pass a physical examination.
Working Conditions

Incumbents in this class may be exposed to the attendant discomforts of working outdoors, to the effort of prolonged periods of walking and standing while on foot patrol and/or guard duty, and to some danger of injury in performing the duties of the class.

Camp Harkness is located in Southeastern Connecticut on the shores of Long Island Sound. The 102-acre property in Waterford CT is comprised of open and wooded land and includes tidal marsh and beachfront. Facilities at Camp Harkness include year-round and seasonal cabins, year-round cottages, seasonal tent sites, barnyard animals, picnic pavilions & grills, accessible playscape, scenic walkway and overlook, bathhouse, beach with seasonal boardwalk, gardens, dining hall, lodge, and infirmary.

Camp Harkness is owned by the State of Connecticut and managed by the Department of Developmental Services.
