Job SummaryThe Behavioral Counselor provides behavioral resources and intervention programs in a high‑school setting. The role focuses on responding to Level 1 and Level 2 behaviors, implementing a positive삭제behavior management system, collecting and tracking data, training staff in de‑escalation strategies, and developing and implementing individualized behavior and climate plans.
Responsibilities- Address negative student behaviors and assist students to alter their behavior.
- Assist in implementing behavioral education plans.
- Assist students in participating in general school activities while ensuring their safety and personal conduct.
- Collaborate and coordinate with the building administrator on early intervention of behavioral issues and de‑escalation of students in crisis.
- Communicate policies and protocols to families and staff.
- Encourage improvement in student attitude, behavior, school atmosphere, academic performance, and personal growth.
- Explore ways to engage students to effect positive attitudes and control over behavior.
- Facilitate access to resources connected to students removed from class or school.
- Implement the Safe School and Positive Climate Handbook.
- Incorporate PBIS standards and framework into classroom and individualized behavioral management strategies faszining recommendations.
- Instill collective values and encourage behavior acceptable for the classroom and school environment.
- Maintain logs and prepare timely, accurate reports regarding incidents and progress to adjust behaviors.
- Participate as a member of the school’s interdisciplinary team.
- Promote and facilitate peer support groups.
- Provide behavioral resources and intervention services to students.
- Provide students with strategies and skills to meet expected behavioral and academic requirements.
- Review and report on referrals, bullying, and other data.
- Review and respond to Level 1 and Level 2 referrals.
- Serve as a first responder to assist staff members with students’ negative behaviors.
- Use disciplinary action to create opportunities for reflection and learning about consequences.
- Work closely with all constituents to correct discipline problems as they occur.
- Collaborate with school staff and parents or guardians of students.
- Perform related duties as required.
- Five (5) years experience working with behavioral resources and interventions for adolescents in a high‑school environment.
- Certification in Physical Management Training procedures.
- Associate’s Degree in education, behavioral science, human services, psychology, or a closely related field may substitute for two (2) years of the general experience requirement.
- College training may substitute for the general experience based on fifteen (15) semester hours equating one‑half (½) year of experience, up to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor’s degree.
- May be required to possess and retain a current Motor Vehicle Class D Driver’s License.
- Knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal rules, regulations and laws.
- Knowledge of behavioral modification strategies.
- Knowledge of biological, cognitive, and social‑emotional development of adolescents.
- Knowledge of child development.
- Knowledge of current best practices, laws, including due process and IDEA, and interventions for special‑needs students.
- Knowledge of educational philosophy, teaching exame, and approaches, and best‑practice research.
- Knowledge of educational testing.
- Knowledge of PBIS and Scientific Research‑Based Interventions (SRBI).
- Familiarity with puberty, cognition, morality, identity, relationships, school, work and culture of adolescents.
- Knowledge of Board of Education policies and district administrative procedures.
- Knowledge of specific disabilities and familiarity with common children’s mental health disorders, and specific strategies/interventions for classroom or other school settings.
