POSITION:
SUBSTITUTE SCHOOL BUS DRIVER


GENERAL DUTIES
:

Operates school buses under all types of weather conditions, including but not limited to, fog, rain, hail, sleet, snow and ice. Transports students and other authorized persons over regular “to and from school” routes, and on field, extracurricular and special or extra activity trips as authorized by the school district officials.


SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
:

  • Drive a school bus on scheduled routes and/or all types of trips in support of district approved activities, both within and outside the school district boundaries.
  • Service, inspect and clean school buses and related equipment as required by state and district policy. This includes pre-trip and post trip inspections.
  • Maintain control of student passengers as related to safety.
  • Report unsafe acts or conditions which require the attention of any person other than the driver.
  • Complete forms, records and reports as required by the state or local school district policies.
  • Successfully complete school bus driver training programs and courses established by the State Superintendent of Public Instruction or the school district.
  • Operate a school bus in accordance with the laws of the State of Washington and policies set forth by the Superintendent of Public Instruction.
  • Perform other school bus driver and related duties as directed by local school district policies.


JOB RELATED TASKS
:

  • Operate and service all school bus equipment and accessories including but not limited to fire extinguishers, highway warning kits, snow chains, sanders, first aid kits, etc.
  • Perform required operational safety inspections of the school bus and all related equipment.
  • Posses and keep current DOT physical and First Aid/CPR requirements.
  • Legible and accurate completion of forms, records, time sheets, trip requests, route studies, incident reports, misconduct reports, accident reports and other activities as may be required.
  • Assist ill or physically impaired students to enter or exit a school bus through the passenger service door as needed.
  • Respond to emergencies as required to include providing assistance to students in evacuation of the bus.
  • Perform miscellaneous duties as required or assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS
:

  • Posses a valid Washington State Driver’s Permit, Class B CDL with passenger and school bus endorsements.
  • Meet the physical and mental standards necessary to perform the duties, tasks and responsibilities of a school bus driver as described in this job description.
  • Demonstrated communication skills to apply to students, district staff, parents and others.
  • We may offer periodic training classes if you currently do not posses the proper Driver’s endorsements.

The salary range for substitute/non-contract drivers is $21.25 to $22.37. The substitute/non-contract driver hourly pay is set at $20.14, 95% of bus driver Step 1 and requires no minimum number of hours worked per year.

If a substitute/non-contract driver works a minimum of 90 Days per school year, after two (2) years their hourly rate will increased to 97% of bus driver Step
1. After working a minimum of 90 Days per school year for three (3) years, their hourly rate will increase to 100% of bus driver Step 1.

Substitutes will accrue 1 hour of sick leave for every 40 hours worked. Substitutes who work 630 hours will become benefit eligible for the remainder of the school year. Standard benefits include, Medical, Dental, Vision, Life Insurance and Long-Term Disability.
