Minimum Experience:
Road Maintenance Worker I:
One year of maintenance, road construction, traffic control, or related experience OR any combination of
education and experience which would provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities
to perform the job.
Road Maintenance Worker II:
Three years of maintenance, road construction, traffic control or related experience OR any
combination of education and experience which would provide the knowledge,
skills, and abilities to perform the job.
Minimum
Certifications:
* Flagger Card (Obtain within 6 months of hire)

Valid Washington State Driver's License.
Road Maintenance Worker II:
Valid Washington State Driver's License (CDL).
Class A with tanker endorsement. (obtain within 6 months of hire)
POSITION SUMMARY:
This position performs roadway maintenance work to keep the roadways, bridges and roadsides safe and in good repair. Road Maintenance Worker II position operates heavy and specialized equipment to perform skilled maintenance and repair work to keep the roadways, bridges and roadsides safe and in good repair and assists in training to other employees in equipment operation and maintenance activities.
This is a career progression series opportunity. Employees are eligible for progression through the classification series based on attaining the minimum qualifications for each level and meeting performance measures.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The following duties are essential for this position. However, they are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. To be successful in this position, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. Other duties may also be required or assigned.
ALL POSITIONS
* Assists in general County road maintenance.
* Performs tasks such as operating a broom machine to clear roadsides and maintain fog line visibility for drivers.
* Replaces damaged guard rails; ensures guard rails are code compliant.
* Assists with traffic control at work sites; maintains job site safety while using two-way radio for communication.
* Trims trees and brush from rights-of-way using chainsaws, pole saws and hedge trimmers.
* Transports equipment in a County pick-up truck with trailer; ensures equipment is secured in a safe manner.
* Performs general highway maintenance and related activities as assigned, including snow and ice removal, temporary and permanent asphalt surface repairs, patching holes, sawing pavement, concrete repairs, installing bridges, painting roads, sign repairs, clearing brush, hauling materials, flagging traffic, sweeping intersections, routering and sealing road cracks, culvert and drainage work, etc.
* Observes distribution of paving material to adjust machine settings or material flow and indicates low spots for workers to add material.
* Responds to unforeseen emergency situations including cargo spills, traffic accidents, blocked roads, pavement buckles, and others as directed.
* Performs traffic control set-ups in high volume traffic and ensures safety of employees and traveling public.
* Locates public utilities in the public right of way using appropriate equipment to track data.
* May be assigned to rotating on-call duties including emergency response and/or nighttime or weekend hours for emergency response or special events. Completes written records of labor and materials used for each work project.
* Maintains appropriate records including complete equipment repair history, work orders, daily job card, and other related data.
* Ensures all work is done according to standard and County practice and procedures.
