Major Function and Purpose

Appointed by the Mayor, under the direct supervision of the Street Supervisor or general supervision from the Water/Wastewater manager, this position performs a variety of semi-skilled maintenance and repair tasks and responsibilities within streets/storm, water, wastewater, airport, and/or parks. Performs work in accordance with sound safety practices.

General Function

This position performs a wide variety of duties in the maintenance, repair, construction or installation of City streets, signs, water, wastewater, storm drainage systems, parks, grounds, roadsides or medians; to operate maintenance and construction tools and equipment.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform skilled mechanic duties involving troubleshooting, diagnosing and repairing gasoline and diesel powered automotive, heavy and light construction and other power-driven equipment.
  • Perform various street maintenance functions; patch potholes, operate street sweeper to remove debris and perform general roadside maintenance.
  • Set up traffic control devices and perform flagging functions in work zones; ensure a safe working environment according to established safety guidelines.
  • Perform maintenance and construction on City water, wastewater, storm drainage systems; install catch basis and manholes; repair and install pipes; operate a vacuum sewer cleaner to clear drainage lines.
  • Remove, repair, replace and/or install street signs; clean and maintain existing signs; trim vegetation that presents safety hazards.
  • Perform heavy equipment operation duties in completing a variety of projects.
  • Perform various grounds keeping functions; mow, water, fertilize and maintain trail and greenway systems, turf and other landscaped areas; pull weeds; install irrigation; apply pesticides as necessary.
  • Perform routine facility repair and maintenance functions including installing doors, floors and locks, repairing roofs, replacing ceiling tiles, lights, painting and concrete work.
  • Pick up and haul garbage and other refuse; lift and carry cans; set up and connect pulling hitches.
  • Ability to enter confined spaces and/or elevated structures, meeting all safety requirements.
  • May be required to handle hazardous materials.
  • May be required to respond off shift for emergencies, snow removal, and/or be on standby status.
  • May operate, maintain, sample and report on water/wastewater treatment systems, requiring Hepatitis A/B inoculations.
Desirable Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities

While requirements may be representative of minimum levels of knowledge, skills and abilities, to perform this job successfully, the incumbent will possess the abilities or aptitudes to perform each duty proficiently.

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and two years related experience and/or related training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to comprehend instructions, correspondence, policies and procedures. Ability to work under pressure and/or frequent interruptions. Ability to work well with the public and co-workers in a team environment.
  • Possess a Washington State certification in flagging and traffic control or ability to become certified.
  • Knowledge and ability for gas and arc welding.
  • Possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License or ability to obtain one.
  • Possess a First aid/CPR certification or ability to become certified.
