Overview

Responsibilities

Summary - The duties reflect responsibilities across positions related to consumer safety inspection and related processes, including knowledge of regulated food commodities and products for human consumption, sampling, quality control and sanitation in food manufacturing or production environments. The role may involve working with colleagues and providing reports or findings as part of daily responsibilities. The specifics are defined by the applicable assignment and location within the FSIS framework.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement, including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below. Specialized experience includes knowledge of properties and characteristics of regulated food commodities or other products for human consumption, gained in roles such as consumer safety inspector, inspection aide, food inspector, public health inspector, quality inspection specialist, or similar position with responsibilities for sampling, quality control and sanitation in a food manufacturing or production environment.

GS-05:
At least 52 weeks of qualifying experience in knowledge of properties and characteristics of regulated food commodities or substances used for human consumption (e.g., meat, poultry, fish, eggs, other food or beverages, or pharmaceuticals). Demonstrated ability to collect samples, perform field tests, report findings in written and/or oral form, and maintain effective contacts with a variety of individuals to discuss food safety standards.

Evidence may come from positions like consumer safety inspector, inspection aide, food inspector, public health inspector, quality inspection specialist, or related roles.

GS-07:
In addition to the GS-05 requirements, at least one year of specialized experience at the GS-05 level, with independent execution of routine and standard duties. The resume should demonstrate 52 weeks of experience performing routine assignments independently, including knowledge of regulated food commodities and substances and related reporting and communication.

GS-08:
At least one year of specialized experience at the GS-07 level, including work with the Federal Meat, Poultry, and Egg Products Inspection Acts; basic SSOP and HACCP principles to verify plant responsibilities; basic mathematics and statistics for testing and sampling; and ability to reach and interpret conclusions.

GS-09:
At least one year of specialized experience at the GS-08 level, including more independent duties such as recommending export refusals and providing temporary coverage at locations outside of the official duty station. Experience may include paid or unpaid work, including volunteer service. See OPM Qualifications Standards, Consumer Safety Inspector Series, GS-1862. The duties are performed in a hazardous working environment.
