Overview

This position provides general oversight and coordination of harvest monitoring, field sampling activities, and reporting associated with Tribal Harvest monitoring and biological sampling of the catch during tribal fisheries. The incumbent may assist the Harvest Coordinator in briefing Tribal Policy Makers and providing recommendations for tribal fishing seasons and may assist with the management of the gillnet site registration database.

Responsibilities
  • Provide daily supervision of the Harvest Monitoring Crew on the Columbia River and its tributaries within the Ceded Lands of the Yakama Nation.
  • Coordinate work schedules and logistics for Harvest Monitors and possible Bio Sampling Crew to ensure necessary data are collected and compiled accurately according to accepted formats.
  • Supervise and participate in sampling of landed fish at Treaty Fishing Sites and Commercial Fish Buying stations and record data for later analysis.
  • With the assistance of supervisors, coordinate with funding entities to develop work statements, deliverables, contracts, sampling plans, and field schedules.
  • Enter and organize data into spreadsheets or databases and perform basic analysis.
  • Assist Harvest Coordinator as needed with gathering information to register tribal gillnet sites, weekly tribal catch estimates, and basic report writing.
  • Prepare memos, briefing documents, letters, etc., as requested by supervisors or Tribal Council members.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Fisheries or related Science with at least two years of relevant experience and supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of basic fish biology with emphasis on Columbia River anadromous species (salmonids, sturgeon, lamprey, walleye, shad, smelt) and the ability to identify each species in the field.
  • Knowledge of basic sampling theory and methods; basic field sampling techniques.
  • Knowledge of Treaty Fishing Areas, locations, and gear types associated with each.
  • Basic computing skills including MS Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) and proficiency in email and web‑based communications.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and any time during open commercial fishing seasons.
  • Ability to interact and work cooperatively with tribal fishers, fish buyers, state and federal hatchery workers, state and federal fishery sampling and research staff, and the general public.
  • Ability to work outside for extended periods of inclement weather.
  • Ensures GSA vehicle is operated safely and maintained according to prescribed maintenance.
  • Must pass pre‑employment background check, drug test, and possess a valid Washington State Driver's License with the ability to obtain a Yakama Nation Driving permit.
Preferred
  • Sensitivity to tribal culture, traditions, and practices.
  • Enrolled Yakama Preference (but all qualified applicants are encouraged to apply).

Minimum Requirements: Bachelor of Science in Fisheries or related Science with at least two years of relevant experience and supervisory experience.
