POSITION: Engine Operator Senior
SALARY: $23.08 – $28.82 per hour DOE
REPORTS TO: Operations Technician Senior
LOCATION: Mount Tolman Fire Center, San Poil District, Keller
Basic Functions: This is the senior firefighter level position (Wildland Fire Engine Crew member) in Fire Management. This is the final level in this series classification. Employees at this level serve as leaders/Engine Crew Boss of a (2-4) two to four-person engine crew. This position may be required to supervise up to 20 firefighters as the crew boss if one is not present.
This position is expected to have advanced firefighting skills and leadership skills. This position may be required to act as an ICT 5. The work involves activities related to wildland fire suppression/management/control as a firefighter on an engine, helitack module, or hand crew. Other related duties might involve fire prevention, patrol, fuels management projects and repair of firefighting tools, equipment and facilities.
Employees will also work as part of the Prescribed Burn Crew and will be required to assist other Fire Management staff with various work projects such as cutting and piling vegetation, operating ATVs, grass seeding, fencing and mowing. The nature of work is characterized by the varied nature of assignments.
Qualifications
Education and Training:
- The position requires a High School diploma or GED.
- Possession of, or the ability to obtain prior to hire
, a valid State Driver’s License
. In addition, employee must be insurable under the Tribe’s licensing requirements. - Must qualify for a U.S. Government Motor Vehicle Operator’s Identification Card.
- The following must be completed within 60 days of hire.
- Must pass the required Arduous firefighter medical examination needed to take the arduous pack test.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Requires knowledge of fire behavior including causes of fire, influence of temperature, humidity, wind, topography, slope and fuel moisture conditions, and fuels in order to know where to attack the fire, build fire line and where to be positioned to manage a wildland fire.
- Requires the knowledge of fire management techniques, methods, terminology, and conditions in order to provide instructions to crew members, accurately analyze complex fire circumstances, determine when additional forces may be needed, or determine when circumstances warrant withdrawal of crew to safe locations.
- Requires oral and written communication skills sufficient to effectively interact with people at all levels, internal and external to the organization, including the public.
- Requires detailed knowledge of the methods and procedures associated with wildland fire suppression and management to resolve a full range of irregular or problem situations when suppressing wildland fires. Knowledge of fire behavior, hazards, and accepted fire safety practices and procedures to prevent injury and loss of life.
- Requires specific technical firefighting knowledge such as, but not limited to, fire engine and pump operations, hand crew operations and/or helicopter operations to enable the incumbent to function in assigned capacities and to instruct or lead others in those duties if necessary.
- Requires the ability to operate pumping mechanisms and determine proper hose lays for the most effectiveness in accomplishing the appropriate fire management activities.
- Requires the knowledge of tactical methods and techniques for use of water and additives in controlling and mopping-up fires in order to efficiently and effectively accomplish operations where water is in short supply.
- Requires skills in use of hand tools such as Pulaski, shovel, and McLeod; and power tools including chainsaw and portable pumps to build fire line and control wildland fire and to perform other non-fire related duties engaged in firefighting and preparations for such assignments.
