Job Summary
TRIO - SSS Peer Tutor assists students in academic success by meeting with them in individual or small group sessions, on a regular basis to clarify material, offer encouragement and assist in understanding content from a specific and designated course. Other assistance provided may include discussing texts, working on study strategies, formulating ideas for papers, working on solutions for problems or preparing for tests.
The Peer Tutor has a demonstrated understanding of and experience in the course area that they are assigned based on transcript review and faculty recommendation. Hours vary according to the tutor’s availability and the number of students that need academic assistance in that course assigned to the tutor. If Peer Tutors do not have a session, they can schedule ‘drop-in’ hours for walk‑in students.

Minimum QualificationsMust have completed at least one semester at BCCC or another community college or university with a 2.5 cumulative Grade Point Average. Must have received a B or better in the subjects to be tutored.
Preferred Qualifications- Previous tutoring experience.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work well and communicate with first generation, low income and/or disabled students.
- Well organized, detail oriented, dependable and creative.
- Arrive punctually at scheduled tutoring sessions and drop‑in hours.
- Attend Peer Tutor Training session and on‑going in‑service trainings through academic year.
- Maintain records of tutoring activities on the ‘Tutee Worksheet’ and ‘Service Log’.
- Demonstrate academic best practices for specific subjects and assignments, including research and writing tactics.
- Assist students with homework, projects, test preparation, papers, research, and other academic tasks.
- Provide encouragement to students to help improve academic performance and self‑confidence.
- Provide students with positive and constructive feedback.
- Check email and voicemail regularly and respond in a timely manner.
- Communicate regularly with the Academic Support Coordinator about student progress through bi‑weekly one‑on‑ones.
- Maintain confidentiality at all times.
- Demonstrate understanding and acceptance of student diversity.
- Follow the highest standard of ethical conduct as a Beaufort County Community College employee.
- Assist with other duties as needed.

CompensationPeer Tutors are paid for tutoring sessions, drop‑in hours, attending trainings, monthly in‑service trainings and one‑on‑ones with the Academic Support Coordinator.
