The Direct Support Professional provides individualized support, supervision, and assistance to adults with developmental disabilities in a day habilitation program. The DSP is responsible for promoting independence, inclusion, skill-building, and community participation while ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of each individual served.
Key Responsibilities- Provide direct support to individuals in daily activities and skill development.
- Implement individual service plans (ISPs) and document progress toward goals.
- Facilitate group and one-on-one activities that promote social and independent living skills.
- Support community integration by accompanying individuals on outings, volunteer opportunities, and recreational activities.
- Promote dignity, respect, and choice in all interactions with individuals.
- Monitor and report changes in individuals’ physical, emotional, or behavioral status to supervisors.
- Ensure a safe and clean environment by following program policies and health/safety protocols.
- Accurately complete daily documentation, data collection, and incident reports as needed.
- Collaborate with team members, families, and professionals to support each individual’s needs and goals.
- Ability to handle physical aspects of job, including bending, stooping, lifting, pushing, pulling, reaching, and walking for periods of time.
- High school diploma or GED required; additional education/experience in human services or related field preferred.
- Previous experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities preferred but not required.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Compassion, patience, and a commitment to supporting individuals with diverse needs.
- Valid driver’s license; obtain a Class E license within 30 days of hire.
- Successful completion of background check(s), drug screen, CPR/First Aid, and any required state or agency trainings.
