Summary

Leads, trains, assigns and may oversee individuals and work crews under the direction of the Public Works Supervisor in the repair, maintenance and construction of public works infrastructure, including; streets, sanitary / storm sewer systems, city parks, buildings, and open space. Oversees all other staff in the maintenance worker series and Seasonal maintenance staff. Performs skilled and semi-skilled work involving the operation and basic maintenance of city fleet vehicles and equipment, such as backhoe, dump trucks, street sweeper, vactor truck, mowing equipment, compressors, hand tools and all other equipment used in the maintenance and operation of the city’s public works department.

Includes but is not limited to such functions as those listed below:

  • Assist the public works supervisor to lead, plan, review, and oversee the daily work of other maintenance staff.
  • Train Maintenance staff and participate in the safe and efficient use of Public Works equipment, operations, and maintenance procedures.
  • Assist public works supervisor in creating weekly, monthly, and yearly work assignment schedules.
  • Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Ensure completion of work assignments, provide information and reports to public works supervisor on completed work assignments.
  • Observe the performance of crew members, provide input into the formal employee performance evaluation process, inform supervisor of performance observations on an ongoing basis, and recommends individual employee performance improvements.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and make repairs to all department equipment and facilities.
  • Coordinate the installation, maintenance and repair of traffic control systems including signs, pavement markings, raised pavement markers, guardrails, guideposts, and traffic calming devices in accordance with MUTCD guidelines.
  • Maintain and repair irrigation systems, playground equipment, landscaping, buildings, and other city facilities.
  • Administer required safety programs, ensure staff compliance with safety standards, and proper use of personal protective equipment.
  • Assists Supervisor in creating and maintaining work performance standards and establishing maintenance programs to meet department goals.
  • Serve as “acting” Public Works Supervisor in the absence of the Public Works Supervisor.
Required Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Required knowledge and ability to safely and efficiently operate equipment, vehicles, and tools utilized in the department.
  • Required knowledge of Federal, State, and local department policies, regulations, safety/health, and all other applicable administrative and operating regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Required knowledge and ability to maintain and repair automotive and equipment systems.
  • Required knowledge of materials, methods, and techniques commonly used in construction, maintenance, and repair activities of a municipal public works department.
  • Knowledge of building and facility maintenance practices in carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting, mechanical, and welding.
  • Ability to read and understand construction plans/drawings.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to work with little or no supervision.
  • Ability to give instructions to others.
  • Ability to read construction drawings.
  • Ability to deal tactfully with citizens and co-workers.
  • Ability to effectively lead, maintain and direct the work pace to meet deadlines as outlined by the supervisor.
