San Juan County is excited to invite candidates to apply for our Chief Criminal Deputy Prosecuting Attorney position. Responsible for the investigation, preparation, and prosecution of all criminal cases in the district, superior and juvenile courts for San Juan County and appeals to the appellate courts;

the investigation into the cause of death of all unattended deaths in the county; the training of law enforcement officers in the substantive, procedural and evidentiary law and its application to criminal investigations.

Examples of Essential Duties
  • Conducts training of deputy sheriffs on procedural, substantive law, and evidentiary law, and its application to, and impact on, criminal investigations.
  • Reviews allpolicereportsandstatements relating tocriminalinvestigationsfor completenessandtodeterminelegalandfactualsufficiencyforprosecutionofcriminal charges;interviews witnesses;confers withlawenforcement officers, forensic scientists andexperts;researches and prepares legalmemoranda;determines charges tobefiledwherecasesarereferredtotheprosecutor's office;outlines charges tobefiled;draftslegaldocuments tobe filed withthecourt;represents the stateinallcriminalcourtpretrialandtrialproceedings in district, superior andjuvenile courts;draftsjuryinstructions; makessentencing recommendations;reviews all requests for information fromdefenseattorneys;conductsplea-negotiationswith defenselawyers;draftslegalformsusedbythedistrict, superiorandjuvenilecourts; prepares legal documents forcourtproceedings;represents countyinappellate courts,toincluderesearching andpreparinglegalmemoranda andappearing before thecourts toarguelegalissues;confers withclerksofthesuperior and district courts regarding legalissues, trialcalendars, andthebasicdaily functioning ofcourts; conferswithmentalhealthandalcoholcounselorsandprobationofficersregardingthe progress ofpersonsplacedonprobation;drafts and prepares documents torevoke probationfordefendants whoviolateprobation conditions, andrepresents thecountyinviolation hearings.
  • Directs the work of two legal assistant sin the preparation and filing of legal documents, preparation of information packets for defense attorneys and the preparation and maintenance of legal files.
  • Maintainscurrentknowledgeofthesubstantive,proceduralandevidentiarylawsofthe Stateof Washington, federalconstitutionallaw,procedures ofthedistrict, juvenile, superior andappellatecourts,techniques ofpreparation and presentation ofcriminaltrials;investigative techniques usedintheinvestigation ofcrimesandintothecauses ofdeath.

    Reviewsnewlegislation andappellate decisions to determine thepresent state ofthecriminallaw;providesmemoranda tovariouscounty agencies regarding theapplicability ofnewlawsandrules totheirpolicies andtheperformance oftheirjobs.

    Researches legalissues,analyzesandapplieslegalprinciples, facts,evidence andprecedents tolegalproblems;presentslaws,facts,evidence andarguments clearly andlogicallyinwritten and oral form.
  • Supervises and directs the work of two victim advocates in supporting individuals harmed by crime.
  • Acts to ensure the rights of victims, survivors, and witnesses are met.
  • Supervises and trains district court deputy prosecuting attorney and interns.
  • Conducts and coordinates investigations with law enforcementofficers into the causes and circumstancessurroundingnatural and unnaturaldeaths of citizens in San Juan County;attends autopsy examinationsconducted by pathologistsandconfers with physicians,medicalpersonnel,toxicologists,morticians,witnessesandfamilymembersto determinecause and circumstancesof death;determinescause of death and prepares death certificates.
  • Actswithinthescopeofhisorherresponsibilities,workingasapublicemployeeand
  • municipal officer with courtesy and professionalism, and adhering to the highest standard of ethics in accordance with RCW 42.52.
  • Minimum Qualifications

    Must have a Juris Doctor or completion of approved training as legal clerk. Must be admitted to practice law in the state of Washington, and have at least six years of practice of criminal law, with extensive experience in trying felony cases; or any combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
