POSITION: Emergency Communications Operator

SALARY: $23.75 per hour

REPORTS TO: Emergency Communications Supervisor

LOCATION: Nespelem, WA

Basic Functions: Operates a multi-channel radio console and a multi-line telephone, while maintaining computer-aided dispatch systems and other computer systems for receiving, coordinating and disseminating critical information from various sources and maintaining radio contact with mobile/field police, fire, and life safety units to monitor response, progress and support.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Training:

  • Requires a high school diploma or GED plus two (2) years’ experience with demonstrated competency in geography, English language, and math plus successful completion of a emergency dispatch course of study.
  • Requires law enforcement data access, criminal history database, and communications device certifications.
  • Requires the incumbent to successfully complete the Police Department’s 12-week training.
  • Requires the incumbent to complete the ACCESS Class (8 hours) within six (6) months from the date of hire.
  • Requires the ability to obtain CPR/First Aide Certification within one (1) year from the date of hire.
  • Requires the ability to complete the Tele communicator I Class within One (1) year from the date of hire.
  • Requires a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be 18 years of age at the time of application.
  • Must provide a completed application, resume and three (3) professional references.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Requires working knowledge of law enforcement terminology, the operating protocols and procedures for emergency dispatch within public safety, and the rules and regulations of the federal communications commission covering radios and voice transmission devices.
  • Requires knowledge of the Colville Reservation geography including major and minor highways and roadways.
  • Requires knowledge of general office equipment, i.e. telephone, copier, facsimile, typewrite, and computer as required by this position.
  • Requires knowledge of and skill at using a computer, common office productivity software, geographic information systems, and specialized applications used in public safety for emergency dispatch.
  • Requires sufficient command of English language and grammar to record and relay information accurately, clearly, and concisely.
  • Requires sufficient human relations skills to gather information while calming callers who are under stress, employ advanced telephone interviewing skills to obtain critical information, and relay information accurately to responders.
  • Requires sufficient knowledge of math to record and compute quantities and distances.
  • Requires skill in learning new information quickly and in thinking and reacting quickly, clearly, and logically in routine or emergency situations that require rational thought, immediate comprehension and action in accordance with established policy and procedures.
  • Requires the ability to carry out the duties of the position.
  • Requires the ability to communicate on and operate a two way radio using codes and language specific to the job.
  • Requires the ability to simultaneously operate a computer-aided dispatch system, telephones, multi-channel radio, TDD (text telephone device for hearing/speech impaired), numerous computer databases and maps.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information gained while working and restricting the use of such information to work duties.
  • Requires the ability to provide dispatch services to and from situation in the tribal police communications network and mobile units, including resource officers, emergency medical technicians and other county units as needed.
  • Requires the ability to dispatch ambulances, tow trucks, fire department, other aide as requested, and maintain appropriate records.
  • Requires the ability to make fast responses and quick and correct decisions, take charge of conversations, and obtain accurate information from callers and responders.
